LOCAL CONNECTIONS: UNC-Greensboro's Gilhool named SoCon soccer all-tournament

Nov. 8—UNC-Greensboro senior Maddy Gilhool (Montrose) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime, enabling the fourth-seeded Spartans to upset top-seeded Chattanooga, 2-1, in the semifinals of the Southern Conference women's soccer tournament.

Gilhool scored seven minutes into the first overtime and UNC-Greensboro protected the lead the rest of the way.

It was her ninth goal and her fifth game-winner of the season, both team highs. She also tied for the conference lead in goals, led the SoCon in game-winners and her 19 points tied for second in the league.

In the final, UNC-Greensboro (10-7-4) lost to No. 2 seed Samford. The game was scoreless through regulation and overtime before Samford won on penalty kicks, 6-5.

Against No. 5 Western Carolina in the tournament quarterfinals, Gilhool also netted the game-winner in a 2-1 victory. For her effort, she was named to the all-tournament team.

—Bloomsburg University freshman midfielder Shay Gillen (Valley View) was selected a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division first-team all-star.

Gillen started all 20 games and totaled four goals and five assists for 13 points. Two of his goals were game-winners as he helped the Huskies (14-5-1) match the program's single-season record for wins. Their season ended in the PSAC championship game with a 1-0 loss to Mercyhurst, which is ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II by the United Soccer Coaches.

Old Dominion University sophomore linebacker Jason Henderson (Delaware Valley) is one of 20 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually since 1994 by the Maxwell Football Club to the outstanding defensive player in college football.

After his 19-tackle performance (2 solo, 17 assists) Saturday in a 12-0 loss to Marshall University, Henderson has 148 tackles (43,105) this season. That continues to lead the Football Bowl Subdivision as do his 16.4 tackles per game.

The three finalists for the award will be revealed Nov. 22 and the winner will be announced Dec. 8.

On the run

Lock Haven University freshman Krista Jones (Elk Lake) placed ninth out of 164 runners at the PSAC Cross Country Championships.

Jones covered 6K Lamb's Creek Course in Mansfield in 22 minutes, 43.8 seconds. Her finish enabled her to earn first-team all-PSAC honors, which go to the first 15 runners.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania sophomore Tori James (Lackawanna Trail) finished 55th in 24:43.0. West Chester University junior Abby Marion (Abington Heights) was 84th in 25:35.7.

Slippery Rock University freshman Michael Novak (Mid Valley) placed 58th in the men's 8K race in 27:18.3.

Wilkes University sophomore wrestler Austin Fashouer (West Scranton) took second at 125 pounds at the King's College Ned McGinley Invitational. Fashouer lost in the final to Luke Hoerle of Stevens Tech, 7-2. In the preseason polls, Fashouer is ranked sixth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and seventh by d3wrestle.com. Sophomore teammate Cameron Butka (West Scranton) also placed second at the invitational at 197 pounds, losing in the final to Camden Farrow of York College, Pennsylvania, 6-0. Butka received preseason honorable mention from d3wrestle.com. ... University of Maryland sophomore tight end C.J. Dippre (Lakeland) caught two passes for a team-high 36 yards in a 23-10 loss to Wisconsin. The Terrapins visit Penn State on Saturday. ... Colgate University senior linebacker J.C. Gaughan (North Pocono) had four tackles (1,3) in a 21-16 loss to Lafayette College on Senior Day. ... Senior goalkeeper Sadie Wood (Honesdale) made 204 saves for the winless University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team. That led the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and ranks third in NCAA Division III.

WEEKLY WINNERS

Keystone College junior defensive back Sean Pettway was named Eastern Collegiate Football Conference for games played Nov. 5.

Pettway had a career-high 11 tackles — all solo — in a 21-20 win over SUNY-Maritime College. His interception with 35 seconds left sealed the victory, which was Keystone's first on its home field in program history.

It is the second time this season Pettway has been honored by the ECFC. He also was chosen Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 17 for his performance in a loss to William Paterson.
