🌱Local 'Curling' Lessons + Local HS Student Makes Global Impact

Good morning, people of Laurel! It's me again, Alexis Goring, your host of the Laurel Daily.

First, today's weather:

Mostly cloudy. High: 47 Low: 35.

Here are the top four stories today in Laurel:

  1. Students returned to virtual learning this week, causing Prince George’s County parent Patrick Paschall and other parents have a dance party "on the neighborhood street corner" upon receiving this news. Virtual learning was difficult for Paschall as a parent. His wife had to go into the office most of the time, leaving him to watch their kindergartner and second-grader. He had to juggle meetings with making sure his kids had the resources they need to participate in virtual classes. It was stressful. (WTOP)

  2. The Winter Olympics will be here in a few weeks. Local lessons for "curling" (one of the most popular and highlighted sports) are available via the Potomac Curling Club. Recently, it held an open house in Laurel. It included some players who grew up on "curling" in Maryland who are now playing curling at a national level. (wmar2news.com)

  3. Live racing at Laurel Park is canceled due to the “lingering effects” of the winter storm that brought snow and ice-cold rain to the region. Live racing at Laurel is scheduled to resume Thursday with a 10-race program. (CBS Baltimore)

  4. Javier Fuentes, a student at Laurel High School, attended virtual school last year. But after attending his classes, he had a commitment beyond his home.He was the only student invited to join a global sustainability panel among educators from Scotland, Australia, Kenya, Mexico, Germany and the United States. His eco-activism now has a global reach. (Maryland Matters)
