Local entrepreneurs support women in need with ‘Meals on Heels’ candle

Local women helping local women in need. A couple of Boston-area business owners are collaborating on a project to help provide healthy, nutritious meals at a Boston shelter.

Every day at the Women’s Lunch Place on Newbury Street, plenty of nutritious and hearty meals are prepared.

“Having a good meal in your stomach allows you to think, start thinking about finding a job, start thinking about housing,” said Allegra Marra, and volunteer and the Women’s Lunch Place Corporate Relations Manager. “Without that good meal, you really can’t process any of that.”

Volunteers not only serve healthy foods, the daytime shelter also offers women a place to get whatever they need—from doing laundry to working on their resume. Relying solely on donations, the Women’s Lunch Place is always looking for help—and that’s where two local entrepreneurs stepped in.

“Let’s make something fun, let’s do what we do best, but do it in a way where we can give back to our community,” said Brittany Di Capua, the founder of Boston Food Journal.

“And then together we chose the give back to the Women’s Lunch Place,” said Lindsay Tia, the Owner of Reilly Laine and The Cue.

Lindsay Tia has used her Reilly Laine candle manufacturing company to donate to several causes, so when Brittany Di Capua, the founder of Boston Food Journal, called her up to create a ‘Meals on Heels’ candle to benefit the Women’s Lunch Place during Women’s History Month, it was a no-brainer.

“I think the most important thing for me as a business owner is to give back what people have given me an opportunity and to pay it forward,” said Tia. “And being able to do that for women in our community is the most important thing to me.

Every day, anywhere from 100 to 175 women walk through the doors at Women’s Lunch Place in search of a nutritious meal. With the ‘Meals on Heels’ campaign for every candle sold, it will provide a healthy breakfast.

“Last year, we actually served the most meals we’ve ever served,” said Marra. “It was 111,000 meals to our guests.”

With a growing need, Lindsay and Brittany hope their candles sell out.

“We’re almost there, but we’re we want to close out the month with, like a home run,” said Tia.

Even when their campaign ends, their other goal is to spread awareness and support for the shelter.

“Let people know what it is and how it helps the community so that even if you don’t purchase a candle, maybe you can get involved in another way down the line and just know what this great organization is doing for the community,” said Di Capua.
