LOCAL GOLF: Williams, Bolcavage, Scarpetta winners at stroke play championship

Jul. 26—It was a sub-par event for the three division winners in the GAP/AGA stroke play championship Wednesday at the Country Club of Scranton.

Honesdale Golf Club's Eric Williams, Elkview Country Club's Ken Bolcavage and Nittany Country Club's Vince Scarpetta all posted scores in red numbers to win their respective flights.

Williams won the amateur division with a 2-under par 70, Bolcavage shot 3-under 69 to win the senior division, and Scarpetta also shot 69 to win the super senior title.

Williams edged WBRE-TV sports anchor A.J. Donatoni (Fox Hill C.C.) by two strokes to win the title. Huntsville's Todd Vonderheid posted 73, and Elmhurst's Doug Nardella and Glen Oak's Kyle Williams carded 74.

Bolcavage ran away with a seven-shot win over Huntsville's Matt Cuddy, with Country Club of Scranton's Bill Brown third with 78.

Scarpetta cruised to a five-shot win over Country Club of Scranton's Mike Vassil, with Elkview's Mike Heck (76), and Stone Hedge's Robin Bonda (78) and Scranton's Kerry Maloney (78) rounding out the top five.

C.C. of Scranton

Audra Lynch and Wendy Cimoch combined to fire a 1-under par 71 to claim the women's member-guest title ny two shots over Jane Molino and Molly Gorman in the gross division.

Susan and Lauren Berry won the net title with 62, one better than Jeanne Nicholas and Christine Yi.

Other flight winners were: First, Carla Pompey-Kris Ruane (gross), Maria Batyko-Maura McDonough (net); Second, Leah Rudolph-Kathy Emanuelson (gross), Isabella Fanucci-Maggie McDonough (net); Third, Kathi Lee-Marianne Wise (gross), Debbie Their-Cathy Stone (net).

—Kathy Walker, Kathi Lee and Mary Jo Pasqualichio posted a score of 68 to win the ladies Red, White and Blue event by four shots over Erin Donahue, Jennifer Sherwood and Cathy Wendolowski. Norina Lynott, Fran Durkin-Keating and Susan Berry grabbed third. ... Jerry Jordan claimed the junior club championship title in the 11-and-under division.

Emanon C.C.

Rick Laneski held off all challengers to claim the senior club championship by four strokes over runner-up John Petrosky. Laneski opened with a 1-over 71 and closed with 76. Rick Mazar (152), Gene Chiavacci (155) and Rich Petrillo (156) round out the Senior Coal Scuttle team for the Sept. 21 event at Fox Hill.

Top three in other flights: First, Dave McDermott, Tom Kerrigan, John Yencha; Second, Jerry Gavin, Mark Kolmansperger, Bob Chabak.

Glen Oak C.C.

Luke Morgan and Conner Abel shot a 1-under 71 to win the junior member-guest title by three over Robert Munley and Robbie Lucas. Age group winners and runners-up were: 14-15, Finn Goldberg-Ben Walsh, Andrew Kettel-Alex Scanlon; 12-13, Brady Comstock-Bryce Comstock, Caleb Connell-William Evans; 10-11, Miles Shimko-Matthew Georgia.

—Penny Zonneville won the women's Oliver Moon title with a 4 and 3 victory over Maryann Yonchiuk. In the men's Moon semifinals, Amil Minora defeated Bill Pastore, 2 and 1.

David Lloyd won the Memorial with an even par round of 72. Nicky Senofonte (73), Gary Borgia (74), John Connell (74) and Jim Fayocavitz (75) rounded out the top five.

Holes-in-one

Tony "Dip" Donato registered his first career hole-in-one on the ninth hole at Glen Oak Country Club. Donato's perfect pitching wedge shot was witnessed by Anthony Williamson, Randy Donato and Ned Dempsey.

—Mike Jordan got his first hole-in-one using a 9-iron on the 14th hole at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course. Witnesses were Ian Connor, John Jordan and Cory Jordan.

—Chad Black aced the 160-yard 18th hole at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course while playing with Phil Kelley and Brandon Lutz. An 8-iron was the perfect club.

—Steve Urban used a sand wedge to ace the par-3 11th hole at Pine Hills Country Club.

Pine Hills C.C.

A crowded field saw Tommy Smith, Billy Smith, Timmy Regan and Jay Cali emerge victorious to don the coveted Bender Open green jacket with a score of 12-under par. The day raised $1,600 on the 11th hole circle of gold for Lily Romero, a 15-year-old diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma and who's made numerous trips to Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville for treatment.

Pa. Open field

Qualifiers for the Pennsylvania Open on Aug. 8 at Longue Vue C.C. include former Delaware Valley and Penn State player Cody Cox, Huntsville's Logan Paciewicz and Bobby Lugiano, and Fox Hill professional Ross Brown.

Country Club at Woodloch Springs head professional John Pillar Sr. is exempt as a past champion.

Stone Hedge C.C.

Robin Bonda outlasted Dave Walters by four strokes to claim the senior club championship with a 36-hole score of 10-over par. Alan Oakley took third.

Jim Soltis won the super senior division with a two-day score of 14 over, six better than Phil Keaney, with Jim Bedford Sr. third. John Erat edged Dave Amori and Mike Drutarovsky by one stroke to win the super senior second flight.

Summit Hills

Rick Lynch and Tom Currier posted a score of 34 to win the Senior League first-half title by two shots over Mike Lukus and Jim Scott. In the separate handicap tournament, Al Vagnetti and Paul Walsh were first with a net of 36, one better than Bill McElory and Dave Maher.
