Local graduates performing well in college athletics

The Varsity 845 region has produced hundreds of collegiate athletes, including nearly 10 in the NCAA Division I ranks. Here’s a look at some highlights:

Minisink Valley grad Alayna Savaglio owns a 6-9 mark through 21 games for Fairleigh Dickinson (18-23). Her 2.17 ERA ranks second in the Northeast Conference and her 91 strikeouts rank fourth The Knights are 6-9 in conference play and sit in sixth place out of eight schools. She had posted ERAs of 4.71, 2.75 and 2.28 the previous three years and has 456 career strikeouts.

Kingston grad Jessica Chilcott is playing centerfield and catching for Iona (17-21-1) as a graduate student. A three-time All-Metro Atlantic first-team all-star and 2021 player of year, Chilcott ranks fifth on the Gaels with a .234 average, tops in doubles (8) and second in RBI (14).

Minisink grad Emma Brennan had started two of her eight appearances for Hofstra – she missed six weeks in the circle before facing Hampton on Saturday, giving up five hits in 0.2 innings. Brennan owns a 3.79 ERA and foes are batting .326.

Warwick grad Hannah Hennessy, a junior at James Madison, has made 14 starts in 30 appearances. She’s batting only .191 but has 12 RBI and ranks fifth on the team with four home runs, her last coming April 6 against Georgia State.

Monroe-Woodbury grad Anna Paravati has played 26 games (13 starts) as a freshman at Fairfield (11-20). She’s batting .208 with a double and four RBI.

Women’s track and field

A host of Varsity 845 graduates are ranking highly in the SUNY Athletic Conference.

Monroe-Woodbury grad Rachel Hirschkind, a junior at Geneseo, is top-ranked in the 5,000 meters (a career-best 16:48.99 in winning the Bucknell Bison Classic last Friday) and ranks No. 6 in the 1,500 (4:45.62). Classmate Kathleen McCarey is top-ranked in the 10,000 (35:42.53) and 3,000 steeplechase (10:39.39).

Saugerties grad Clara Sensini, a grad student at Brockport, leads the SUNY Athletic Conference in the 400 meters at 59.05 seconds (she is 0.23 seconds off her career best). She ranks No. 8 in the 400 hurdles (career-best 1:07.45). She’s a member of the top-ranked 1,600 relay team (3:56.71).

Monroe-Woodbury grad Ella DePhillips, a senior at Oneonta, ranks No. 9 in the 800 meters (2:19.84).

Pine Bush grad AnJalyna Talmadge, a junior at Cortland, ranks No. 8 in the 100 hurdles (career-best 16.34 seconds), is ranked No. 7 in the high jump (career-best 5 feet, 1 inch) and leads in heptathlon (3,702 points). Isabella Fabrizio, a junior at Oneonta, ranks No. 5 in the hammer (career-best 150-10).

Men’s track and field

Pole vaulter and Wallkill graduate Louis Martinez, a sophomore at Alabama, ranks No. 8 in the Southeast Conference at 5.13 meters (16 feet, 9.75 inches) – he placed sixth at the UF Tom Jones Memorial last Friday. Martinez, who is expected to jump for Puerto Rico at the 2024 Olympics, jumped 17-2.75 last season.

Rondout Valley grad Cameron Sands, at Oneonta, ranks No. 6 in the 100 meters (11.02), second among freshmen in the SUNYAC.

Wallkill’s Rich Samuels, a grad student at Cortland, ranks No. 10 in the 800 meters (1:55.93)

Port Jervis grad Harry Tomassi, a senior at Cortland, ranks No. 12 in the 1,500 meters (career-best 4:03.86). Port’s Roland Zanger, a sophomore at Cortland, ranks No. 11 in the 110 hurdles (16.24 seconds).

Washingtonville grad Michael Brockway, a junior at Plattsburg, ranks No. 8 in the 10,000 meters (32:37.29, one second off personal best) and No. 5 in the high jump (1.83m).

Football

Minisink grad Austin Sullivan will graduate from the University of Minnesota next month, but the long snapper plans to take a final year of eligibility at the University of Connecticut.
