GALESBURG BOYS BASKETBALL

Freshmen edge Blue Devils

GALESBURG — The Galesburg High School boys freshmen basketball team edged Quincy 58-56 on Wednesday night at John Thiel Gym.

DeAmiyn Elston and Tyree Taylor had 15 points each for the Silver Streaks. Jamar Range chipped in a dozen points for Galesburg.

Galesburg beats Kewanee

PRINCETON — The Galesburg High School bowling team beat Kewanee 2,358 to 2,071 Wednesday night at Rail Splitter Lanes.

The Silver Streaks’ Ellee Shinn had a three game series high with a 570. Overall high game also went Shinn with a 222.

Chloe Day had a 551 three game series for Galesburg. Ashley Yoder (431), Alissa Schultz (408), and Iris Brechbuhler (398) contributed to the Streaks’ team total.

LTC GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tornadoes beat Cougars

ABINGDON — The Abingdon-Avon High School girls basketball team defeated ROWVA/Williamsfield 60-48 on Wednesday night in Lincoln Trail Conference action.

Brook Pieper had a game-high 24 points to lead the Tornadoes. Ashley Jones added 22 points for A-Town.

Whitney Godsil finished with 11 points to lead the way for the Cougars. Lizzie Johnston had nine points, and Emma Seiboldt added eight points for R/W.

Ridgewood routs Stark County

WOODHULL — The Ridgewood girls basketball team upended Stark County 56-22 Wednesday evening in a LTC contest.

Ciara Clark had 13 points to lead the Spartans, and Paige Leander chipped in 10 points for Ridgewood.

Heat clip Golden Eagles

ALEDO — The West Central girls basketball team caged the Golden Eagles 53-41 on Wednesday night in a LTC affair.

Shelby Bowman led the way for the Heat with 33 points. Harlee Hainds chipped in eight points for West Central.

In other LTC girls action, Knoxville grabbed a 57-26 home win over Wethersfield. Annawan went on the road and handed Galva a 59-33 loss, and Princeville defeated United 62-29.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Monmouth drops nail-biter to Lake Forest

MONMOUTH — The Monmouth College men's basketball team put three players in double figures but couldn't hold the lead in a 78-76 home loss to Lake Forest on Wednesday.

Monmouth (2-12, 1-5) had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer but the putback of a missed free throw hit the rim.

The Scots got off to a quick start with baskets from Jonathan Oradiegwu and Jordan Metcalf. Amyas Njoku and Kendall Brasfield both hit 3-pointers as Monmouth built a 17-9 lead.

Lake Forest called timeout and made a mini run as Sean Espinosa and Johnny Roeser connected on baskets. Leading 23-20 the Scots got a basket from Metcalf and a 3-pointer from Brasfield for an eight-point lead. Will Ewald buried a 3-pointer to give the Scots a 31-20 lead and an 8-0 run.

A 3-pointer from Oradiegwu pushed the lead to 13 for the first time at 38-25. Lake Forest went on a 5-0 run before the Scots hit a pair of free throws. Ewald put Monmouth up 42-32 with a basket before the Foresters hit the last basket of the half for a 42-34 halftime score.

Brasfield hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to 11 points early in the second half. On the next possession, the freshman hit a pair of free throws and after a Lake Forest basket, Brasfield hit a jumper for seven straight points.

The teams traded baskets and fouls with the Scots still leading by 13 until the Foresters scored on two straight possessions to cut the lead to 57-48. Breck Biedscheid ended that run with a baseline jumper. Lake Forest scored on the next two possessions and cut the lead to 59-52 with 11 minutes to play.

Lake Forest pushed its lead to five and Monmouth turned the ball over with 2:59 left. Brasfield knocked down a jumper but Lake Forest answered. Oradiegwu made a pair of free throws and Lake Forest took a timeout with 1:11 to play and a 76-73 lead. The Foresters missed a shot and Oradiegwu scored to cut the deficit to one. After a timeout, Monmouth fouled and Lake Forest missed both free throws giving the Scots the ball with 28.7 seconds to play.

Out of the timeout, Ewald missed a corner 3-pointer but Brasfield got the rebound and was fouled with 15.8 seconds left. He missed both and Lake Forest went to the line with 14.1 seconds left. Zach Foster made both free throws for a 78-75 Forester lead.

Lake Forest fouled Ewald with 2.8 seconds to play. He made the first and intentionally missed the second. The Scots tipped the ball twice but it wouldn't fall in off the hands of Brasfield or Oradiegwu as the Foresters won 78-76.

Brasfield and Metcalf finished with 20 points each and Oradiegwu had 17. Ewald had eight points off the bench and Oradiegwu led Monmouth with 14 rebounds while Njoku had five assists.

Knox falls at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa - The Knox College men's basketball team fell 116-61 at Grinnell in a Midwest Conference game on Wednesday night.

Sean Gallery got Knox off to a good start with a layup in the first minute of the game. However, the Pioneers went on a 19-2 run to take the early lead. The Prairie Fire hung around for most of the first half, but Grinnell pulled away by 21 with 6:16 left in the first half. The Pioneers led 58-24 heading into halftime.

Grinnell hit a 3-pointer to start the second half, but Knox then went on an 8-0 run. The Pioneers began pulling away from there again and cruised to victory.

Jordan Rayner led the Prairie Fire with 19 points on a 14-for-14 showing from the charity stripe. Cade Windham went 4-for-4 from the field to tally eight points. He also grabbed seven rebounds.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Scots suffer first MWC loss

MONMOUTH —The Monmouth College women's basketball team got 30 points from Josie Morgan but suffered its first conference loss of the season with an 84-75 setback to Lake Forest on Wednesday.

The loss ends a school-record 14-game home winning streak and drops the Scots to 8-4 overall, 5-1 in the MWC.

The Scots and Foresters went back and forth in the first quarter with neither team getting a lead of more than four points.

Morgan, Tarae Warner and Zoie Wall all hit 3-pointers in the first quarter for the Scots. Kaitlyn Osmulski made a running layup for the Scots first non 3-pointer of the night as Monmouth trailed 12-11 after one.

Morgan knocked down another 3-pointer early in the second quarter for a 16-14 Monmouth lead. After a pair of free throws from Lily Harlan, Morgan nailed another 3-pointer for a 21-16 Scots lead and then banked in a 3-pointer from the wing. Warner grabbed her fifth steal of the half and Morgan made two free throws for a 28-20 lead.

Wall made a 3-pointer in the final minute of the half to give Monmouth a 31-22 lead. After Lake Forest scored with 10 seconds left, Wall made another 3-pointer to beat the buzzer with the Scots up 34-24 at the break. Morgan hit 4-of-5 from 3-point range in the half for 14 points and the Scots made 8-of-20 as a team.

Lake Forest cut the Scots lead to five points half way through the third quarter before Jadyn Mitchell made a long jumper for a 43-36 lead. Harlan made a pair of free throws and Mitchell drilled a corner 3-pointer to complete a 7-0 Scots run for a 48-36 lead.

Morgan knocked down a free throw with 1:21 left in the quarter for a 51-41 lead. Wall added a pair of free throws on the next possession and the Scots led 56-46 after three quarters.

Morgan scored the first points of the fourth quarter from the free throw line as she went over the 20 point mark for the third time on the season. Lake Forest hit 3-pointers on two straight possessions to cut the Monmouth lead to 58-52. Osmulski knocked down a 3-pointer to end the run and Monmouth called time out with 8:34 to play.

Lake Forest scored five in a row before Jordan Kintigh made a jumper in the lane. Monmouth's lead was cut to 63-61 before the Foresters tied the game on two free throws with 6:21 to play. Lake Forest grabbed the lead at 65-63 before Harlan made a free throw.

Lake Forest went on a 6-0 run and pushed their lead to seven with four minutes to play. Morgan made a layup, but the visitors responded with nine straight to lead 80-66 with less than two minutes to play. Morgan completed a 3-point play and then made two free throws to cut the LFC lead to nine.

Morgan hit the 30-point plateau with two free throws with 20.9 seconds left but those marked the final points of the game. Wall finished with 13 points while Osmulski scored 10. Osmulski and Harlan had six rebounds each while Warner had seven steals.
