Local man on moped killed in Newport crash at rotary

NEWPORT — A 28-year-old local man died after crashing his moped at the rotary at the intersection of JT Connell Highway and Admiral Kalbfus Road.

Newport Police Lt. April Amaral in a phone conversation with The Daily News said police are withholding the name of the man until next of kin is notified.

Amaral said police reviewed video that showed the man traveling west on Admiral Kalbfus Road around 11:30 p.m., on Tuesday night when he struck the elevated portion of the rotary.

"He must not have seen the new curbing, which is pretty significant," Amaral said.

She said the man and the moped were hurled into the center of the rotary and weren't discovered until Wednesday morning, after the sun had come up. The call came in around 6 a.m. Amaral said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
