Local masters track athletes reap big medal haul at continental championships in Juarez

El Pasoan Elizabeth Teague won four gold medals at the North and Central American and Caribbean Masters track and field championships in Juarez last weekend, highlighting a haul of 25 medals by seven local athletes that included three other golds.

Competing in the 45-49 age division, Teague won the discus throw, weight throw, shot put and throws pentathlon while taking silver in the hammer. The track events for the continental masters championships were at the Estadio Benito Juarez while road and cross country races took place in that area.

Other El Pasoans to take gold included Guillermina Bonilla in the 60-64 age division, who won the 10-kilometer road race and 1,600-meter relay while taking silver in the 8-kilometer cross country and 400 relay, and Adrian Herrera, who won the 5,000 in the 40-44 age division while taking two seconds in the 800 and 1,500 meters.

Virginia Jackson reaped four silver medals in the 55-59 age division in the 8-kilometer cross country, 10-kilometer road race, the 400 relay and 1,600 relay. Her husband David Jackson was second in the 2,000 steeplechase and both relays.

Servando Garcia took silver medals in the 65-69 age group in the 1,500 and 400 relay and struck bronze in the 800.

Alejandro Lopez was second in both relays in the 45-49 division to go with an eighth-place finish in the 8-kilometer cross country and sixth in the 10-kilometer road race.
