Local moms supporting each other through baby formula shortage

Parents are panicking over the lack of baby formula on store shelves.

Some moms are turning to each other for support by starting chats and trades on Facebook groups.

Brittany Harper is one of the moms helping out.

“I’m weaning her off, and she’s gonna be on whole milk. So, I was like, ‘hey, let me just give it away for free,’” Harper said.

Mothers’ Milk Bank of Florida said its phone has been ringing off the hook.

“We go through very rigorous testing to ensure the safety for the babies who will receive the milk too,” a representative said.

An average of 43% of formula varieties are unavailable nationwide.

One of the major baby formula manufacturers warns the crisis could last through the end of the year.

The Food and Drug Administration reached a deal with the nation’s largest formula maker, Abbott, to reopen its factory tied to the shortage.

It will still take at least eight weeks to get that product into stores.
