HARBOR SPRINGS — Nub's Nob Ski Area and Resort will come alive this summer with three evenings of music curated, booked and put on by local musician Eliza Thorp.

This first-year series — aptly dubbed the Nub's Nob Summer Series — is small but will be bringing some mighty Michigan-based acts to the ski resort alongside an open mic night for area performers to give it their best on stage.

"I guess it all happened though persistence," said Thorp

"I had approached Ben Doornbos (Nub's Nob general manager) last year about this and we just couldn't make it work with my schedule so we just waited until this year but I started hounding him again as it got closer to the season to get the ball rolling," she said.

Thorp, a musician in her own right, has performed across the state and is a singer-songwriter who has a list of accolades, including a studio album "Queen of the Sea" in which Grand Rapids area publication Local Spins said "it unfolds subtly and brilliantly with gorgeous, thought provoking lyrics that reflect her Michigan upbringing in Petoskey."

Thorp is also currently in the production stages of her sophomore and follow-up album that is likely to come out later this year.

However, the upcoming series — while booked and put together by Thorp — will feature other Michigan-based acts, including Northern Michigan's Charlie Millard Band and Detroit's Remnose.

"I knew all of them and ran it all by Ben and we both thought they'd be a great fit for this series," said Thorp.

The upcoming Nub's Nob Summer Series kicks off this month on Thursday, June 16 with an open mic open to anyone and everyone. Sign-up starts at 6 p.m. and the open mic will begin at 6:30 p.m. A piano, amp and microphone will be available. However, it is asked that musicians that use other instruments — such as guitars — bring their own.

The second date on Thursday, July 21 will feature the Charlie Millard Band with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and music starting at 7 p.m.

The third and final date on Thursday, Sept. 8 will feature Remnose with doors open at 6:30 p.m. and music starting promptly at 7 p.m.

The open mic is free but the following two shows do have a suggested $10 to $15 suggested donation at the door to help pay the performers.

All of the upcoming shows and the open mic will also take place on the ski resort's new winter garden patio with food and drink offerings.

"I think this will be really special," said Thorp.

"Nub's already has this big family and fan base and it's a really special place for a lot of people but I think this will be that much more special with the setting there in the summer, the hills, music and the sunset going down surrounded by friends," she said.
