Straker writing award winners named

ZANESVILLE − Ruben Quintero of Zanesville High School was the $2,000 grand prize winner for the 2023 Mary Helen Straker Awards for Writing out of 15 students from Muskingum County High Schools. Schools winners received $500.

School winners were Addison Starner for Bishop Rosecrans; Reighlynae Merritt and Lillianna Neff for East Muskingum; Lola Barnett for Foxfire; Ella Hawkins, Makenna Staker and Caleb Buck for Franklin Local; Brook Brady, Caden Garven and Bell Scarberry for West Muskingum; and Seth Knott, Craig Neal, Ruben Quintero and Jenna Stewart for Zanesville.

Zane Grey Family Day set

NORWICH − Zane Grey Family Day will be from noon to 4 p.m. April 29 at the National Road and Zane Grey Museum, 8850 East Pike, Norwich.

There will be a 50th anniversary program presentation at 11 a.m., music by Barefoot McCoy at noon and a vintage baseball game at 2 p.m., pitting the Ohio Village Muffins against the Zane Greys.

Events are free, but donations are accepted for the museum's educational programming. Campfire cooking and food will be available by donation. There will also be games and activities for children, a prize wheel, cowboys look-alikes, museum tours and Rosanne Vrugtman, president of the Zane Grey's West Society.

Drive-thru dinner with Chef Steve

ZANESVILLE − The Good Deeds Service Club of Zanesville is having a drive-thru dinner with Chef Steve from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. May 18, with meals to be picked up at Chef Steve's Celebrations Banquet Room, 730 Putnam Ave.

Cost is $30 with pre-orders due by May 11. Proceeds benefit the South Zanesville United Methodist Church food pantry. Dinner choices are lasagna, baked steak with redskin mashed potatoes, meatballs with cheese hash brown casserole and parmesan sauce chicken with loaded cauliflower casserole.

Civil War Roundtable to meet

ZANESVILLE − The Zanesville Civil War Roundtable will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. April 24 at the Stone Academy Museum, 115 Jefferson St.

Presentation planned for In-Demand Jobs Week

ZANESVILLE − Brad Hollingsworth of Hollingsworth Consulting will present I2 = Innovation Integration as part of In-Demand Jobs Week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 4 at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce, 205 N. Fifth St.

During the interactive workshop Hollingsworth will introduce participants to specific tools and systems that make it simple to get outside the box and spark new ideas and creativity while addressing day-to-day operations that can cause complacency.

Port Authority to meet

ZANESVILLE − The Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority board will meet in regular session at 10 a.m. April 19 at the Welcome Center, 205 N. Fifth St.

The next meeting of the Port Authority Board will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Welcome Center.
