Spongy Moth treatments to begin

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) will soon begin aerial treatments to control populations of the Spongy Moth (formerly Gypsy Moth) in Ohio, through a means by which the mating cycle is disrupted.

Treatments in Guernsey County and north Caldwell are expected sometime this week, weather permitting. Treatments are administered using a low-flying yellow aircraft, approximately 100 feet above the tree tops. In all areas receiving treatments, ODA will use a single application of the product SPLAT GM-O. The product is not harmful to birds, bees, plants, pets or humans.

Ohioans can view maps of treatment blocks at ODA’s Spongy Moth website. When the project begins, daily updates on treatment progress across the state will be available on the website or by calling 614-387-0907 or 614-728-6400. For more information about the Spongy Moth or for specific treatment locations, visit ODA’s Spongy Moth webpage.
