Zanesville gets $5.46M FEMA funding

ZANESVILLE − The City of Zanesville has received $5.46 million from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for stabilization of Muskingum Avenue.

The critical roadway is currently closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic due to rockfalls and land slippage, which have caused hazardous conditions. The stabilization and reopening of the road will not only reduce traffic congestion in the area but also decrease response times for first responders. The City of Zanesville will providing the remaining 10% of the project cost, or $606,862.

Bridge replaced on Bagley Road

ZANESVILLE − The Muskingum County Engineer's Office has announced that Bagley Road will be closed for 21 days starting July 31 from Slack Road to Ridgley Road for a bridge replacement.

Housing committee meeting canceled

ZANESVILLE − The housing committee of Zanesville City Council has canceled its meeting for Aug. 7.

Cram the Cruiser at Walmart

ZANESVILLE − The Ohio State Highway Patrol Zanesville Post will partner with Walmart for a Cram the Cruiser event to benefit Christ's Table from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, at the South Zanesville Walmart, 2850 Maysville Pike. Troopers will be collecting non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, paper products and personal care items.

Muskingum County gets rail funding

COLUMBUS − The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio recently approved $3 million in safety upgrades at rail crossings in three counties. This included $251,888 to install flashing lights and gates at the crossing on Moose Eye Road in Muskingum County by July 26, 2024.

Alzheimer's program at senior center

ZANESVILLE − The Central Ohio Chapter of the Alzheimer's Office will host a community program, 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's, from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors, 160 N. Fourth St.

Participants will learn how to recognize common signs of the disease, how to approach someone about memory concerns, the importance of early detection and benefits of a diagnosis. Pre-register by calling 800-272-3900 or go to alz.org for more information.

Muskingum University gains accreditation

NEW CONCORD − Muskingum University has been awarded a five-year accreditation for its educator preparation programs via the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation.

The commission evaluated evidence and documentation regarding the program’s capacity for and commitment to quality with regard to each of the AAQEP standards and determined that all four standards are met for initial accreditation.

The program recruits, prepares and supports candidates, including many first-generation college students, to work effectively as professional educators who can adapt to different contexts and continue to grow professionally. Muskingum University engages with stakeholders and partners to strengthen the P-20 education system with a focus on the local communities it serves.

Conn's highlighted at Walmart

ZANESVILLE − Walmart has started a new initiative spotlighting more than 35 regional chip brands across the country to increase visibility at local stores. The goal is to strengthen communities and support local and regional brands. Chosen brands will be given prominent placement and visibility in snack aisles.

This includes Conn's Potato Chips at both of the Zanesville Walmarts and the store in Ashland.

Summer showcase planned in New Lex

NEW LEXINGTON − A summer showcase will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 6, at the Perry County Calvary Arts Center, 447 S. Main St., New Lexington.

There will be a silent auction and demonstrations of art workshops held this summer focused on acrylic painting, musical drumming, recyclable art, dance, musical theater, ukulele playing and silversmithing.

Bubenchik graduates MC

MARIETTA − Lexi Bubenchik of Norwich recently graduated Marietta College with a master's degree as a physician's assistant. Parker Dinan of Nashport has joined the physician assistant studies program.
