Local News Briefs: Bean dinner, band concert, Farm Bureau honors, blood drives set

GAR bean dinner upcoming

NEW CASTLE − The Great Army of the Republic 156th annual bean dinner will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 20, at McElwee Park in New Castle. Menu includes soup beans and cornbread, potato salad, shredded chicken, ham, hot dogs, pie and bottled water. Boxed lunches are $10.

The church service is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a flag raising by the Mohawk Valley 4-H Club at 10:45 a.m. Brad Fuller will perform from noon to 1 p.m. and the Walhonding Rube Band will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Dave Snyder will be present from the Walhonding Valley Museum.

Annual chamber dinner Sept. 15

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce will have its annual dinner and awards at 6 p.m. Sept. 15, at Lake Park Pavilion, 23253 Ohio 83.

Tickets are $60 each or $525 for a table of eight. Catering will be by Benson's Market and Catering and entertainment will be Saxy Rob of Canton.

Community Band performing Friday

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton Community Band will present its last concert of the summer season, "Tributes," at 7 p.m. Friday, on the Coshocton Court Square.

Selections include "Bacharach And David," "The Beatles Remembered," "Rock, Roll And Remember," "Tribute To Count Basie" and "The Stars And Stripes Forever."

Boards to meet

COSHOCTON − Coshocton City Schools Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17, in the cafeteria of Coshocton Elementary School, 1203 Cambridge Road.

The Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities will meet in regular session at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 16, at Hopewell School, 23720 Airport Road.

Career Center announces lunch program policy

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton County Career Center has announced its policy for free and reduced priced lunches for the coming school year under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast, After School Care Snack and Special Milk programs. The policy and application forms are available at the school office.

Farm bureau presents honors

COSHOCTON − The Coshocton County Farm Bureau recently held its annual meeting and dinner with presentation of awards.

Anna Scheurman received the Coshocton County Farm Bureau Scholarship and Todd Endsley received the Member of Distinction Award. Tyler Cline was recognized for his efforts in growing the organization's membership. Teresa Watts of the farm bureau office in Zanesville was also recognized for her work.

Delegates to the 2024 National Farm Bureau Convention are Todd Endsley and Luke Durbin. Delegates for the 2023 Ohio Farm Bureau annual meeting are Kayla Durbin, Todd Endsley and Jesse Whinnery. State trustees are Jenny Cox and Kyle Walls.

Blood drives scheduled upcoming

COSHOCTON − Red Cross American blood drives will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 18 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 23, at Roscoe United Methodist Church and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 29, at the West Lafayette First Baptist Church. Hoover portrayal at Prairie Chapel Church

COSHOCTON − Alice Hoover will be portraying Susanna Wesley during 10:30 a.m. church services Sunday at Prairie Chapel Methodist Church, 45494 County Road 23.

Susanna was the mother of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, and Charles Wesley, a prolific hymn writer. She's known as the Mother of Methodism. For more information, contact the church at 740-622-3992.

Frontier Power holds annual meeting

COSHOCTON − Approximately 700 members attended the recent annual Frontier Power and Frontier Propane meetings.

Elected trustees via mail voting were announced. For Frontier Power, Ann Gano will represent District BII of Tuscarawas County and Tim Dickerson will represent District D of Coshocton County. Both are incumbents. For Frontier Propane, Jerrod Allison will represent District A of Coshocton, Licking and Muskingum counties and incumbent David P. Mizer will represent District B of Holmes, Tuscarawas, Guernsey and Knox counties.
