Costco Wholesale opening in Stark County

CANTON − The new Costco Wholesale store will open at 8 a.m. Aug. 17.

The 160,000-square-foot warehouse at 4953 Huckleberry St. NW is the first Costco to be built in Stark County. The members-only retailer is the anchor tenant of the Creekside Crossing shopping plaza.

The $28.5 million development includes a tire service center and gas station.

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce will hace a ribbon cutting at 7:30 a.m. just before the Costco Wholesale store opens to the public.

Free legal clinic will be offered Wednesday

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Ohio Justice Bus is a mobile legal aid office and technology hotspot that allows legal aid and pro bono attorneys to travel to and provide legal services to Ohioans at no cost to clients. The Ohio Justice Bus is partnering with the Tuscarawas County Law Library and Southeastern Ohio Legal Services to offer free legal advice to low-income residents of Tuscarawas County.

Talk privately to an attorney about family law issues, including divorce, dissolution, custody and visitation from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Tuscarawas County Law Library, 125 E. First Town Days scholarship recipients announced

NEW PHILADELPHIA – As part of the First Town Days opening ceremonies recently, five $1,000 scholarships, sponsored by VFW Post 1445, were awarded:

  • Michaela Yoder and Isabella Fockler, Dover High School

  • Rachel Nay, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Home School

  • Maria Meiser, Tuscarawas Central Catholic

  • Marilyn Stokey, New Philadelphia High School

Students take top honors at competitions

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Several Buckeye Career Center students brought home top honors at recent international and national career-technical student organization competitions.

2023 exercise science alumna Erika Kugler from New Philadelphia placed fourth in the Life Support Skills competition, for the second straight year at the HOSA Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference. 2023 exercise science grad Austin Gump from Dover placed seventh in the Interviewing Skills competition. Gump competed at last year’s international competition, as well.

Other BCC students who competed at nationals were Kamree Lindon, Dawson Harvey, and Katelyn Brown.

HOSA-Future Health Professionals is a global student-led organization with a mission to promote career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

Three additional students competed at the 2023 SkillsUSA National Leadership Conference. The team of Aaron Lane and Jonathon McConnell placed 12th in the nation in the Urban Search and Rescue competition, while Ryan Smith took 12th in the Criminal Justice competition.

Lane will return to BCC this coming school year, while McConnell and Smith graduated with the class of 2023.

Local teen receives state 4-H award

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Allison Kendle from New Philadelphia received the Citizenship and Community Service Achievement Award when the 2023 Ohio 4-H Achievement Awards were presented recently in Columbus. She has been a member of 4-H for 11 years and will be a junior at New Philadelphia High School this fall.

Parral to hold meeting on utilities aggregation

PARRAL − The village of Parral has called a special meeting for 6 p.m. Monday in the village hall to pass resolutions regarding electric and gas aggregation to be put on the November ballot.
