Local News Briefs: Grant will help elementary students explore careers

Career development grant received

ZANESVILLE — A conglomeration of agencies in Southeast Ohio have received a $200,000 Southeastern Ohio K-6 Careers — Regional Partnership Grant for developing a curriculum supporting career exploration for local elementary schools.

The curriculum will build awareness of careers at an earlier age and support Ohio’s attainment goal of having 65% of the state’s workforce needing a post high school credential, certificate or two-or four-year degree by 2025.

Those involved in the program are Appalachian Ohio P-20 (AOP-20) Council, Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development, Crooksville Exempted Village Schools, Mid-East Career and Technology Centers, Muskingum University, Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center, Noble Local Schools, Ohio Valley Educational Service Center and Zanesville City Schools.

Joy Wolfel of Mid-East will be the instructor for the pilot program in Crooksville, Noble Local and Zanesville districts. Five more school districts will be added in fall 2023.

ODNR decommissioning Stump Lake

NEW LEXINGTON — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry has decommissioned Reclamation Impoundment No. 3, known as Stump Lake, as part of planned improvements to Perry State Forest.

After assessment, engineers determined the dam, which was not constructed for long term use, is showing signs of decline that would be too costly to repair. The project will result in the temporary closure of Forest Road 1 for 90 days starting Aug. 1.

While aesthetically pleasing, the lake has become biologically dead with little to no aquatic life because of acid mine drainage. Maintenance of the dam is difficult due to its steepness and the need to continually remove woody vegetation that would damage the dam. With the dam showing signs of decline, the costs of maintaining safety standards are not feasible and the decision was made to decommission the lake, ODNR stated.
