Johnson gets Jenco Award

ATHENS − The Jenco Foundation and Foundation for Appalachian Ohio recently held a ceremony awarding six residents of Appalachian Ohio with Jenco Awards.

The honors recognize individuals who have devoted themselves to direct, caring action that contributes to quality of life in Appalachian Ohio. One of the honorees was Kyle Johnson of Muskingum County.

The local organizer focused on equity and inclusion in the Zanesville area has spearheaded several community events in recent years. While still in high school, he founded Voice of the Youth, an organization dedicated to giving young people an opportunity to express their hopes for their community in a safe and inclusive space.

Rich Hill Trustees meeting

CHANDLERSVILLE − Rich Hill Township Trustees will meet in regular session at 8 p.m. Monday at 3640 Herron Road.

Hydrants being checked

ZANESVILLE − The City of Zanesville Water Division will be flushing fire hydrants from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, in the general area of Larzelere, Luck, Pershing, Dryden, Virginia and Ohio streets along with all related side streets.

Residents may experience low water pressure and discoloration and should refrain from doing laundry until after 4 p.m.

Community Development Committee meeting canceled

ZANESVILLE − The Community Development Committee of Zanesville City Council meeting for Monday has been canceled. The next regular meeting will be at 5 p.m. June 26 in council chambers at city hall.

Genesis gets ACS grant

ZANESVILLE − The American Cancer Society recently awarded a $7,500 transportation grant to Genesis HealthCare System for patients receiving treatment at Genesis Cancer Care Center to help alleviate some of the financial burden of cancer treatment.

The grant is one of 380 transportation grants totaling $6.2 million awarded to health systems nationwide. The funding will allow health systems to provide eligible patients an estimated 577,350 rides to treatment.

City doing roadwork

ZANESVILLE − The City of Zanesville has announced roadway repairs after new waterline installation Monday to Friday at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Dresden Road.

At various times, the northbound lane of traffic will be restricted to one lane from McConnell Avenue to Dresden Road and McConnell Avenue will be closed from Maple Avenue to Stanton Avenue. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes. Restrictions and closures will be posted with message boards, signs and barrels.

London man dies in motorcycle wreck

GLENFORD − The Lancaster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced a fatal traffic crash at 2 p.m. Thursday on Ohio 204, near mile marker 11 east of Glenford in Hopewell Township of Perry County.

Authorities said Joseph S. Spires, 31, of London, was operating a 2018 Kawasaki 125pro heading northwest on Ohio 204 when he failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway. He was ejected from the motorcycle as it overturned. He was not wearing a helmet, the patrol post stated.

Spires was transported to Genesis Somerset Medical Center and then flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus by MedFlight. He was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m. by staff at Grant. Assisting on scene were the Hopewell Township Fire Department and EMS.
