Local News Briefs: McLaughlin wins essay contest

Essay contest winner named

ZANESVILLE — The Muskingum County Bar Association has announced winners in its annual Law Day essay contest. The topic was “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.”

The winner of a $1,500 scholarship was Makaela McLaughlin, daughter of Sam and Kim McLaughlin. She plans to study economics and history at Villanova University. Luke Pratt, son of Bill and Susan Pratt, received a $1,000 scholarship for second place. He plans to study biochemistry at Ohio State University.

Both are seniors at Bishop Rosecrans High School. An awards ceremony will be at noon May 27 in the large courtroom of the Muskingum County Courthouse.

Blood drives set

COSHOCTON — Several Red Cross blood drives have been scheduled for the local area.

Drives will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 2 and 1 to 7 p.m. June 13 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 1 to 7 p.m. June 8 at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1105 hall in Nashport and 1 to 7 p.m. June 13 at the Adamsville Community Center.

Drives for Morgan County will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3 at the Riecker Building in McConnelsville and from 1 to 7 p.m. June 15 at the Stockport United Methodist Church. Drives for Perry County will be from 1 to 7 p.m. June 9 at the Somerset American Legion and 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 4 at the Thornville Masonic Lodge.

Locals make ODU dean's list

COLUMBUS — Named to the spring semester dean's list at Ohio Dominican University were Brady Blattner of Cumberland, Steven Ervin of Norwich, Shyanne Neighbor of Thornville, Jonathan Spears of New Lexington, Lauren Thomas of Somerset, Hannah Watson of Frazeysburg and Kaden Watts of Zanesville.
