Local News Briefs: Ohio 60 to be widen in Morgan County

Money earmarked for Morgan County roadwork

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State Controlling Board recently released $595,692 for road improvements in McConnelsville. Eligible costs include widening, paving, road construction and reconstruction and right-of-way infrastructure improvements such as sewer or utility lines.

The project will consist of a road widening project expanding Ohio 60 Northwest to include a center turn lane for safer access of the business corridor. As a result, 30 new full-time jobs will be created and 235 existing jobs will be retained.

ZSC getting state funding

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Controlling Board recently released $88,920 to enhance safety at Zane State College. Funding will be used to install seven emergency call towers around campus. Towers will be highly visible on campus and be connected to local 911 first responders.

Pennington makes dean's list

SEARCY ARKANSAS — Clay Pennington of Zanesville has been named to the spring semester dean's list at Harding University. The senior is studying music education.

CFLP to meet

NEWARK — The Coshocton-Fairfield-Licking-Perry Solid Waste District Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. June 24 in Room A of the Donald Hill Administration Building, 20 S. Second St., Newark. The meeting will including approving designated facilities and establishing a public comment period.

The policy committee will meet prior at 8:30 a.m. to ratify the new solid waste plan.

Rich Hill Trustees to meet

CHANDLERSVILLE — Rich Hill Township Trustees will meet in regular session at 8 p.m. June 27 at the meeting hall, 340 Herron Road, Chandlersville. A budget hearing will also be held.

Registration open for 5K Walk and Run

NEW CONCORD — The John Glenn Track and Field and Cross Country Boosters are accepting registrations for the Fireman's Festival 5K Walk and Run and John Glenn Friendship 7 Miler. There will also be a youth one-mile Fire Truck Trot.

All races will be part of the annual New Concord Fireman's Festival at 9 a.m. July 9 with the 5K live and virtual. The 5K fee is $30 and includes a T-shirt. Sponsors and volunteers to help on race day are also being sought for all races.

French Family performing for OVO

MCCONNELSVILLE — The French Family will perform for the Ohio Valley Opry at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Twin City Opera House, 15 W. Main St., McConnelsville. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Camille, Stuie and Sonny are originally from Australia and have been performing traditional country music for 20 years.

Also performing are Tai Swanagan and Zooey Ray of Charleston, South Carolina, Beth Bigham, Matt Coleman, Mike Morrison, Jada Riley and Marvin and Deana Clark.

Locals honored at COTC

NEWARK — Central Ohio Technical College has announced its president's list and dean's list for the spring semester.

Named to the dean's list were Lauren Beverley and McKenzie Noblick of Frazeysburg; Megan Kollar and Caleb Thomas of Nashport; Olivia Alward, Thomas Burns, Sydney George, Bailey Goodrich, Austin Hendrickson and Abigail Mills of Thornville; and Tiffany Darr, Menina Jackson and Jennifer Williams of Zanesville.

Named to the president's list were Allyson Fisher of Frazeysburg; Makaila Arledge and Emily Thorp of New Lexington; Jessica Archer and Scarlett Barrick of Thornville; and Amanda Arnold and Jessica Crowder of Zanesville.

Morgan County gets new wildlife officer

ATHENS — Ohio Wildlife Officer Ben Smith has been assigned to Morgan County by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.

He's a 2020 graduate of the Wildlife Officer Academy and previously served in Brown County and as an officer at-large for Southeast Ohio. He replaces Todd Stewart, who retired in 2021 after 32 years of service.

Brown is originally from Perry County and graduated Sheridan High School in Thornville in 2015. He graduated Hocking College with a degree in wildlife management in 2018. He graduated from the police academy of Central Ohio Technical College in 2019.

Hartman Scholarships awarded

ZANESVILLE — The Muskingum County Community Foundation has announced four winners of the 2022 Christopher Kelly Hartman Memorial Scholarship.

Devon Davis of West Muskingum High School plans to attend Zane State College this fall. Nathaniel Haroper of Maysville High School will go to the University of the Cumberlands. Laikyn Lewellen of Maysville High School will attend Zane State or Central Ohio Technical College. Kaylee Pieper of West Muskingum plans to take classes at Hocking College.
