Inclusive playground opening at Dillon

ZANESVILLE − The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will open a new inclusive playground at Dillon State Park at 10 a.m. Monday. It will include a ground-level ramp entrance, accessible activity panels, sensory equipment and a multi-user swing.

US 22 traffic impacted Monday

ZANESVILLE − A box culvert replacement project will begin Monday on US 22 between Pine and Alfred streets. Two-way traffic will continue with one lane in each direction maintained.

Granny's Knob Road closing Monday

ZANESVILLE − Granny's Knob Road will be closed at various locations between Ohio 83 and the Guernsey County line from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, for culvert replacements weather permitting.

Holmes supports congressional term limits

COLUMBUS − Ohio State Rep. Adam Holmes (R-Nashport) has committed to supporting term limits for Congress by recently signing the Term Limits Convention Pledge.

The pledge is provided to candidates and members of state legislatures. It reads, “I pledge that, as a member of the state legislature, I will cosponsor, vote for and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the limited purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

Recreation guide available

ZANEVILLE − The new Get Up, Get Out and Go guides for Zanesville and Muskingum County are available by calling 740-455-8282 or emailing acook@zmchamber.com.

The guide offers a full listing of events taking place throughout the whole county from May to October. It features special outdoor adventures opportunities and favorite go-to destinations.

Veterans monument being rededicated

THORNVILLE − A rededication of the veterans monument in Downtown Thornville will be at 10 a.m. Memorial Day. The monument has been expanded to include space for 21st century deceased U.S. military veterans. The Sheridan High School Band, American Legion Flag Detail and AmVets Honor Guard will participate along with special speakers.

ZMS participates in Do the Write Thing challenge

ZANESVILLE − Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost recently honored 10 students who were finalists in the Do the Write Thing challenge at Zanesville Middle School.

The national program asks middle school students to discuss how violence impacts them and to share their ideas about reducing violence in their community. Other state school districts participating are in Springfield, Canton, Lima and Youngstown.

Zanesville City Schools had 450 submissions from seventh and eighth grade students with Aylah King and Evan Woerner advancing to the national conference in July in Washington D.C.

Mid-East BOE to meet

ZANESVILLE − The Mid-East Career and Technology Centers Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. May 8 at the Zanesville campus, 400 Richards Road.

Parent Café starting

NEW LEXINGTON − Parent Café, a meeting of parent by parents and for parents, will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays from May 8 to 22 at the Perry Activity Center, 112 S. Main St., New Lexington.

The topic May 8 is taking care of yourself, May 15 is being a strong parent and May 22 is building a strong relationship with your children. A light meal and childcare will be provided. Those attending all three meeting will receive a $20 gas card and additional supports.

Second Saturday events in Shawnee

SHAWNEE − Second Saturdays with food trucks and live music will be from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Saturday of each month from May to September.

Playing will be Randy Gleason on May 13, Mike Boley and Offspring on June 10, Ten Hearts on July 8, Marietta Road on Aug. 12 and Blue Jeans on Sept. 9.

Cooperrider making presentations

THORNVILLE − Judge Luann Cooperrider will be making two special presentations on Perry County court cases.

A presentation on the .22-Caliber Killers case will be at 7 p.m. June 3 at Somerset American Legion, 107 E. Gay St. The case centers on Gary and Thaddeus Lewis, who terrorized Central Ohio in 1977 and 1978, robbing and shooting 10 people across three counties. Cost is $20 and will include dinner. Proceeds will benefit the fireworks for the Somerset Celebration.

Cooperrider will be covering several historical cases at 6:30 p.m. June 1 at the Somerset Artist Co-op, 206 S. Market St. Proceeds benefit the co-op. Cost is a donation with snacks provided.

Summer workshops for youth scheduled

NEW LEXINGTON − The Perry County Calvary Arts Center will be running free summer arts workshops for youth at the center, 447 S. Main St., New Lexington.

Workshops June 5 to 9 are on creating recycled art and a mix of singing, songwriting and bucket drumming. Workshop June 12 to 16 are acrylic painting and dance. Workshops July 10 to 14 will be learning ukulele and silversmithing. Building sets and performing a version of "Charlotte's Web" for a music theater camp June 19 to 30. A summer arts showcase and silent auction will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 6.

Oaks at Bethesda honored

ZANESVILLE − The Oaks at Bethesda, a Trilogy Health Services senior living community, was honored with an award for outstanding customer service during the company’s annual spring meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.

It earned the President’s Diamond Service Award, recognizing Trilogy communities who scored in the company’s top 6% to 30% based on the customer service survey.

Trilogy solicits feedback from the residents and families they serve twice a year. The Oaks earned an overall score of 4.8564 out of five from feedback in categories including staff attitude, quality of care, food quality, activity programming, appearance and cleanliness.

Library to hold family reading festival

ZANESVILLE − The Muskingum County Library System and Muskingum County Literacy Council is holding a family reading festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 13 at the John McIntire Library.

The theme is Reading is Our Superpower. Participants are invited to come dressed as a superhero. In attendance will be characters dressed as superheroes, Pete the Cat, Paddington Bear, Rainbow Fish and Taco Dragon. There will be superhero décor, prizes, food trucks and more than 40 vendors. Perkins appointed advisory board

COLUMBUS − Bradley J. Perkins of Nashport has been reappointed to the Ohio Reclamation Forfeiture Fund Advisory Board for a term running April 27, 2023, to January 10, 2027.

Workshop canceled

ZANESVILLE − The I2 = Innovation Integration workshop scheduled for May 4 at the Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce has been canceled.

NEW CONCORD − The East Muskingum Local School Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. May 10, at John Glenn High School. The board will also held workshop session will be held at 10: a.m. Thursday, to discuss planning for next school year.
