Local News Briefs: Selected shooting ranges offer free day on Aug. 20

Free range day set for August

The following public shooting ranges offer free range day so individuals can gain hands-on experience and instruction with firearms at no charge from certified instructors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 20.

  • Deer Creek Wildlife Area, corner of Ohio 207 and Cook Yankeetown Road NE, Mt. Sterling

  • Delaware Wildlife Area, 1110 Ohio 229, Ashley

  • Grand River Wildlife Area, 6693 Hoffman Norton Road, Bristolville

  • Spring Valley Wildlife Area, 3570 Houston Road, Waynesville

  • Woodbury Wildlife Area, 41384 Ohio 541, Warsaw

On-site staff will provide equipment, ammunition, ear protection, and eye protectione. The shooting range permit requirement is waived on all Division of Wildlife Class A, B, and C shooting ranges on this date.

East Guernsey board to meet

The August regular board meeting for the East Guernsey Local School District Board of Education has been scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24 in the CCP Lab, Buckeye Trail High School, 65555 Wintergreen Road, Lore City.

Planning commission/CIC to meet

The next quarterly meeting of the Guernsey County Planning Commission and Community Improvement Corporation will be at 8 a.m. Aug. 5, in the County Administration Building conference on Wheeling Avenue.  Any business to be submitted for consideration by the commission must be in the CIC office by close of business on July 28.

Cambridge Cruise-In car show

Cambridge Main Street will be hosting the Cambridge Cruise In Car Show Saturday, Aug. 20 on Wheeling Avenue. Registration begins at 9 a.m., judging begins at 11 a.m., and awards will be presented at 4 p.m. on the courthouse Lawn. Registration is $10 per vehicle. Couple to be inducted in hall of fame

James and Loretta Moss will be inducted into the Cambridge City Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. James' awards and honors include the God and Country Award, Eagle Scout Award, Wood Badge Beads Award, Silver Beaver Award, Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow, Salute to Scouting Award, 65 Years Pin for Volunteer Services to the Boy Scouts, The Scoutmaster Award, Nationwide Insurance Star Award for Top 10 Mutual Funds Status, Nationwide Insurance Group Insurance Sales Star Awards and Nationwide Insurance President’s Awards.

Loretta Moss is a lifetime member of the Unity Presbyterian Church. Her awards include Wood Badge Beads Awards, Silver Beaver Award, Salute to Scouting Award, 35 Years Pin for Volunteer Services to the Boy Scouts and Merit Badge Counselor for the Textiles Merit Badge.

The inductees will be recognized at halftime of the Cambridge Bobcat football game on Aug. 26. The official induction ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at the Cambridge High School Auditorium. The cost of the lunch is $15. Reservations are required by Aug. 19. Contact Sharon Cassler at 740-439-2640 for reservations.

Makeup donations accepted

Cambridge Main Street is partnering with Secret Santa to collect such as makeup, makeup bags and bath sets for their teenage clients. Makeup and unused bath items can be dropped off at the Cambridge Main Street office, 123 Southgate Parkway. Contact the office at 740-439-2238 or director@downtowncambridge.com to make arrangements for donations.

Recycling trailer in Cumberland

The SouthEastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District recycling trailer will be in Cumberland Aug. 2-3. It will be at the Spencer Township Building on Mill Street.
