Local News Briefs: Spring concert set for May 10 at Central Trinity

Concert planned for May 10

ZANESVILLE — A public spring music concert by the Zanesville Civic Chorus Chamber Singers and John Glenn High School PanJGea Steel Drum Band will be at 7:30 p.m. May 10 at Central Trinity United Methodist Church, 62 S. Seventh St.

The chamber singers are directed by Ann Briggs, director of the Zanesville Civic Chorus. PanJGea is directed by Jonathan Kelsey, band director at John Glenn High School. This concert is the final event for the Thursday Music Club’s 112th concert season.

Gleaner Scholarships awarded

ZANESVILLE — Gleaner Life Insurance Society has awarded $250,000 to 99 students in multiple states. Each students received $2,500 to put toward college expenses.

Zanesville area students receiving awards were Megan Davis, a student at Miami University-Hamilton majoring in electromechanical technology, Chad Bell, a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho majoring in computer and informational science, Lillian Stirling, who plans to attend Salt Lake Community for Business, and Emily Stirling, who plans to attend Snow College.

MHRS to meet

ZANESVILLE — The Mental Health and Recovery Services Board will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. May 12 at the board office, 1500 Coal Run Road. The finance and audit committee and partners workgroup meet prior at 6 p.m.

Conservation board having meeting

ZANESVILLE — Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will meet in regular session at 4 p.m. May 10 at the Rural Services Building, 224 Underwood St.

Hampp part of winning team

ATHENS — Rachel Hampp of Zanesville was one of six students from Ohio University who placed first in their task for the 32nd annual WERC Environmental Design Contest in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The team was tasked with creating a solution to remove volatile organic compounds from contaminated water created in processed used by the oil and gas industry. Such compounds are gasses that are emitted into the air from these processes that are often harmful to the environment and can be carcinogenic.

Luallen joins AAA

SAINT JOSEPH, MISSOURI — Wyatt Luallen of Adamsville recently became a junior member of the American Angus Association headquartered in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Junior members of the association are eligible to register cattle in the association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

MVESC establishing afterschool programs

ZANESVILLE — The Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center is receiving $961,150 in grants to launch a new afterschool program at New Lexington Schools and expand programs at Morgan and Ridgewood schools. This was part of $89 million in summer learning and afterschool opportunities grants from the Ohio Department of Education.

The New Lexington program will start in August and run through June 2024 for students in kindergarten to twelfth grade. It will be housed in the New Lexington Workforce Development Center with students being transported there after school daily. A technology coach will be assigned to students and many services will be offered, such as health and wellness, social-emotional learning, STEM lab, makerspace, agriculture technology and projects at the school farm, family and community events.

The afterschool programs at Morgan and Ridgewood provides additional STEM resources and social-emotional learning. They are for those in kindergarten to twelfth grade and will run from this August to June 2024.

Safe Sitter course offered

ZANESVILLE — Genesis Women's Services is offering Safe Sitter babysitting courses for teens and preteens babysitting, caring for a younger sibling or just home alone. Classes will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 3 and 9 at Genesis HealthPlex, 2800 Maple Ave.

Nurses will teach first aid, safety, injury prevention, CPR demonstrations, safe and appropriate toys and gams and finding and interviewing for babysitting jobs. Cost is $50 and includes lunch, two snacks and training handbook. Register at genesishcs.org under classes and events tab.
