Local nonprofit lends a hand to Smith County Sheriff’s Office farming

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – The Smith County Sheriff’s Department broke ground on Thursday as they gear up for another year of farming.

They intend to grow a wide variety of crops, tended to by jail trusties. All food will be distributed to the East Texas Food Bank to feed local families in need.

“It’s a very special project to us because we know the purpose of this program and we know the end result is going to be great for the community and the people that work with it,” President of the Lone Tarrant Antique Tractor and Engine Association Charles Parmley said.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office has done this for several years, along with some members of the Lone Tarrant Antique Tractor and Engine Association, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of antique farm machinery.

“This year, they’ve invited our whole organization to be part of the land preparation,” Parmley said. “Trusties are going to come out and plant onions, potatoes and what-have-you, through the year. We’re happy to be a part of this, and we’re glad we were invited. We love to do community projects like this, and we’re having a lot of fun.”

Next week, farmers will begin using the land, which is located along Highway 155 South, to plant crops.

“If people come out here during the growing season, they can see they do a beautiful job keeping this piece of property cultivated, tilled and harvested well,” Parmley said.
