Local police investigating case of animal cruelty, rubber band wrapped around cat’s leg

Brackenridge police are investigating a case of animal cruelty after an officer found a black kitten in distress. The team at Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue in New Kensington is doing its part to help that kitten recover.

“We were in the middle of doing surgery yesterday, and an officer came in asking for assistance,” said Dr. Becky Morrow. The kitten, named Vic, had a black rubber band wrapped multiple times around its leg, and Morrow said this was no accident.

“There’s absolutely no way. It’s like if you tie your hair in a ponytail. It was wrapped around twice and put there on purpose,” Morrow said.

Dr. Morrow has seen plenty of cases of animal abuse over the years but said they never get easier.

“It’s just really sad because the amount of pain and suffering this poor kitty went through. And we know, based on the tissue and loss of viability, it has been on there for at least a week,” Morrow said.

Vic may be out of his first surgery, but he’s not out of the woods just yet. The band caused a lot of damage to the tissue in his leg, which still might have to be amputated.

“He’s obviously in a lot of pain, we have him on multiple medications and antibiotics, and he’s going to need multiple surgeries,” Morrow said.

Those surgeries could cost thousands of dollars, so Frankie’s Friends is asking for the public’s help to help with Vic’s care.

The investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, contact Brackenridge police.
