A local prosecutor will step into a new role as a Ventura County Superior Court judge on Monday after an appointment by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Marine Dermadzhyan, a deputy district attorney, was appointed to the role in late July. She will fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John Smiley, according to a news release.

Dermadzhyan, who was born to Armenian immigrants, has served with the Ventura County DA's office since 2014, where she most recently prosecuted domestic violence cases. She previously served with the Tulare County DA's office and as a law clerk with the DA's office in Los Angeles County.

“I am grateful to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for giving me the opportunity to serve this wonderful community for the past nine years,” Dermadzhyan said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing this service and assisting the Ventura County Superior Court in the fair and effective administration of justice.”

Dermadzhyan, an adjunct professor at the Ventura College of Law, earned a master's degree in criminal justice from Lamar University and a Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School.

“Marine has the temperament, experience and intellect to serve as an outstanding judge on behalf of Ventura County and the cause of justice,” Ventura County DA Erik Nasarenko said in a statement.

Annual compensation for the position is $231,174, according to the governor's office.
