LOCAL ROUNDUP: Basketball showcase set for Saturday at Andrews

Jan. 6—HIGH POINT — Big Time Sports will host the Battle of the State Invitational — an eight-game high school basketball showcase — on Saturday at T. W. Andrews High.

Games will start at 10 a.m. and conclude with the final game starting at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10.

The schedule is: 1 of 1 Prep Academy boys vs. Bethany Community School at 10 a.m.; Andrews girls vs. Northern Guilford at 11:30; East Forsyth girls vs. Charlotte Catholic at 1 p.m.; Winston-Salem Christian boys vs. Charlotte Catholic at 2:30; The Burlington School girls vs. Quality Education at 4; Shining Light boys vs. Mt. Zion Christian at 5:30; Wesleyan Christian girls vs. Southern Durham at 7, and TW Andrews boys vs. Calvary Day at 8:30.

BASKETBALL

TW ANDREWS, MOREHEAD

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews notched its fourth straight win by beating Morehead 65-61 in Mid-State 2A Conference boys basketball Wednesday in Andrews' Foree Gymnasium.

The Red Raiders, who outscored the Panthers 21-13 in the fourth, improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

In the girls game, Andrews rolled to a 57-7 victory. Ashley Bowman had 13 points while Anaya Cureton had 11 points to lead the Lady Raiders, who improved to 8-2 and 3-0. Sanai' Johnson chipped in 10 steals.

BISHOP, WINSTON-SALEM PREP

WINSTON-SALEM — Bishop McGuinness cruised past Winston-Salem Prep 61-6 in Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference girls basketball Wednesday at Prep.

Charley Chappell, Adelaide Jernigan and Kiersten Varner each scored 10 points to lead the Villains (8-3 overall, 1-0 conference), who led 24-1 through one quarter.

In the boys game, Bishop fell 77-66 to dip to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Riggs Handy and John Campbell each scored 21 points to lead the Villains, who trailed 37-27 at halftime.

E. DAVIDSON GIRLS, SALISBURY

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson lost 77-11 against Salisbury in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference girls basketball Wednesday at East.

In the boys game, Salisbury won 75-20.

Both Golden Eagles teams are 0-14 overall and 0-3 in the CCC.

BETHANY, NC LEADERSHIP

KERNERSVILLE — Bethany's boys withstood a N.C. Leadership Academy rally and posted a 49-44 victory in Northwest Piedmont 1A play Wednesday at N.C. Leadership. Bethany (7-10, 1-1 NPC) led 19-15 at halftime and 36-22 entering the third quarter.

Laken Locklear led NC Leadership (6-4, 0-2 NPC) with 17 points and Troy Shoemaker had 14. Nick Hurst grabbed 13 rebounds for the Falcons, and Cade Shoemaker dished 10 assists.

In the girls game, NC Leadership prevailed, 57-13. The Falcons improve to 2-8, 2-0 while Bethany is 0-11, 0-1.

THOMASVILLE, ASHEBORO

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville lost 54-41 against Asheboro in nonconference boys basketball Wednesday at Thomasville. The Bulldogs dipped to 8-3 overall.

In the girls game, Asheboro won 45-22. The Bulldogs moved to 0-9.
