Local roundup: Coast Guard wrestling team finishes second at NEWA Duals

Jan. 24—PROVIDENCE — Top-seeded Coast Guard, ranked eighth nationally, placed second at the NEWA Dual Championships on Sunday for the third straight time.

The Bears had a bye in the first host and second-seed Johnson & Wales 19-17 in the championship match.

The Bears, who beat JWU for the first time in 20 years with a 24-14 win on Dec. 10th, are now 4-1 in dual meets this season.

In the quarterfinal win over Williams, Coast Guard won six of the ten matches, but four of the six matches were won via pin as the Bears advanced to the semifinals.

Joe Chapman at 157 (1:09), Phil Rogers at 165 (2:05), Paul Detwiler at 184 (1:53) and Coy Spooner at 197 (1:53) all registered pins in the win over Williams.

In the semifinals, Rogers, David McCullough, Detwiler and Spooner all registered pins as the Bears beat the Pride 33-13.

In the championship match, Coast Guard trailed until Coy Spooner earned a 9-2 decision at 197 pounds to give the Bears a 17-16 lead. JWU's Liridon Leka, the top heavyweight in New England and ranked seventh nationally, picked up a 4-1 decision to give the Wildcats the win.

Chase Randall (133), Devin Woodworth (157) and Steve Rochard (165) also earned wins by decision in the championship match while Detwiler earned a 25-9 tech. fall for the Bears at 184 pounds.

H.S. girls fencing

— Waterford remained undefeated in both foil and epee with wins over New London on Saturday. The Lancers won 9-0 in foil with Taylor Wininger-Sieve, Danielle Nykyforchyn and Charlotte Morin each going undefeated and Waterford won 6-3 in epee with Katie Hawkins leading the way at 3-0.

H.S. boys' fencing

— Waterford picked up a couple of wins over New London on Saturday, taking foil 8-1 and epee 6-3. Ahsan Arshad and Corey Sammataro were each 3-0 in foil and Mehroze Ahmad went 3-0 in epee.

H.S. wrestling

— Bacon Academy went 3-2 at the Granby Duals on Saturday. Aaron Running (160 pounds) had three pins and Dante Colella (152), Aden Taylor (285), Jay Wikarska (126), Carson Brown (152) and Gabriel Mahon (132) each won two matches for Bacon (8-21).

Women's hockey

Camille Phelan scored 4:07 into overtime to lift Connecticut College to a 4-3 win over Wesleyan in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game on Saturday night. Phelan also scored with six seconds left in the third period to send the game into overtime and assisted on the Camels' first two goals. Melissa Alexander and Melanie Conca scored goals, Miyu Miyazaki had an assist and Abby Wieczorek made 18 saves for Conn (6-7-2, 2-6).

Men's basketball

— St. Thomas More lost to Northfield Mt. Hermon 98-84 on Saturday. Kyle Carlesimo led T-More with 29 points.

College squash

— The Conn College men's team lost to Wesleyan 8-1 on Saturday in NESCAC play. Tyler Maguire won 3-2 at No. 1 for the Camels (2-6, 0-4). The Conn women (3-6, 0-4) lost to Wesleyan 9-0 on Saturday.
