LOCAL ROUNDUP: Comets move on to district tennis semifinals

May 4—Crestwood cruised past Berwick 4-1 Monday and into the semifinal round of the District 2 Class 3A Tennis Championships.

Hosting the Bulldogs (3-8) for the quarterfinal round match, the red-hot Comets (9-1) were only beaten in the first singles match, where Berwick's Brendon Turowski outlasted Ben Ziegler 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

It would be the Bulldogs' lone team point.

At second singles, Crestwood's Julien Lecoste coasted past Dylan Smith (6-0, 6-3), while teammate Kurt Grenzberg was shutting out Berwick's Zander Switzer (6-0, 6-0) at third singles.

The Comets wrapped up the quarterfinal win in the doubles portion of the match.At first doubles, Noah Partington and Alex Covelens held off Caden Reader and Graham Marshman 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The Comets' Ryan Kostiuk and Brayden Fenwick teammed up to beat Gabe Hook and Logan Noraski 6-0, 6-1 to close out the match.

The Comets move on to Wednesday's semifinal against the winner of the North Pocono-West Scranton match. The semifinals are 11 a.m. at Kirby Park.

H.S. Track & Field Girls Mahanoy Area 81 Panther Valley 60

McKenna Cavenas (high, long, triple) and Allyson Babinsky (100, 200, 300H) won three events apiece as Mahanoy Area scored a 81-60 Schuylkill League Division II girls' track and field victory over Panther Valley on Monday, dealing the Panthers their first setback of the season.

The Lady Bears are now 5-1 on the season.

Hailey Schreffler (800, 1,600) won two events for Panther Valley (6-1).

H.S. Softball North Schuylkill 10 Pottsville 1

One of seven players with two hits each, Johannah Taylor had a home run and four RBIs to lead North Schuylkill to a Schuylkill League Division I victory over Pottsville.

Madeline Hall also homered and had four RBIs. She joined Taylor, Violet Ryan, Joslin Stitzer, Emilee Slotcavage, Shaina DeAngelo and Morgan Dinger with two hits each.

On the mound, Dinger earned her 10th win by tossing a one-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks.

Victoria Fuss had Pottsville's only hit, a single, and the Crimson Tide's RBI.

Meghan Macleary pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts over five innings and Mahanoy Area beat Panther Valley with just three hits in a Division III game.

Panther Valley committed six errors, giving Mahanoy Area nine unearned runs among its 10 runs.

Alexis Cooper had Panther Valley's lone hit, a single.

Avery Dowkus and Hailee Brown each homered and Lourdes scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to overtake Shenandoah Valley in a non-league game.

Dowkus had three hits and Brown and Desirae Mattis each had two for Lourdes, which posted five of its 11 hits in the seventh.

Hannah DeAngelo had three hits for the Blue Devils. Haely Sosna tripled and singled and losing pitcher Abbie Davis had two hits for Shenandoah Valley.

At Mahanoy City, Michael Pascoe allowed only one earned run and struck out 10 in five innings and he helped his cause with two doubles, a single and three RBI as the Panthers took another step toward the Schuylkill League Division III title.

Johnny Byers added two singles and three RBI and Chase Weaver also singled twice for the winners.

Kevin Guzman smacked a two-run homer and doubled, CJ Serra hit a double and two singles and Mark Lazar had a triple and double to spark the Cougars' 16-hit attack. Connor Shamany chipped in two singles.

Valley East Yankees 19 Phillies 5

Gavin Serock collected three doubles and a single, Michael Eckrote blasted a home run and two singles, and Libio Espiritusanto pitched well and singled three times, powering the Yankees to victory.

Scott Mooney slapped a double and triple for the Phillies. Logan Pop tripled and pitched well, and Luke Gordon excelled on the mound.

Jayden Stedjeski pitched well in his mound debut, and also slapped three singles in the early-season victory for Earley-Polli Insurance.

Sebastian Darr and Caleb Rentschler both singled three times for the winners.

Zach Hannon and Chase Swircek each singled twice, and Michael Trovitch added a base hit for Valley Pizza.

Maylath Therapy 14 Cy. Builders 0

Landyn Klinger shined at the plate and on defense to lead Maylath Therapy, including his first home run and a double.

Mason Eckert struck out nine batters and had a double, and Logan Billig singled and drove in a pair of runs for Maylath's.

Bronx Mummey delivered two singles, and Lucas Tranguch also singled for Conyngham Builders.
