Local roundup: Hartman, Wood lift CGA women past Conn College

Mar. 7—NEW LONDON — Kyra Hartman and Kira Wood had career days as Coast Guard Academy rolled to an 88-66 women's basketball victory over Connecticut College on Saturday.

Hartford finished with 23 points and Wood 21 for the Bears (2-0), while Emma Puddington had 18 points and five assists and Annabella Farabaugh had 16 points and 11 rebouinds. Wood also had five assists and made five 3-pointers. Coast Guard shot 52.2 percent from the floor.

Claire Gulbin led Conn (0-3) with 17 points and five steals while Jaycie Rojik added 14 points and seven rebounds.

College wrestling

— No. 3 Coast Guard had five pins during a 41-12 road win over Southern Maine. Paul Detwiler (174), Jon Wagner (194), AJ Pagliarulo (141), Noah Caskey (149) and David McCullough (184) each recorded falls for the Bears, Detwiler recording the fastest pin in just 1:13. Phil Rogers (technical fall at 165), Parker Brunkala (8-4 decision at 125) and Tony Ulaszek (6-5 decision at 157) also won for CGA.

Men's basketball

— Zach Scott, a freshman from Stonington, had 20 points and seven rebounds in his collegiate debut, but UConn Avery Point dropped its season opener to New Hampshire Tech, 97-56, in Concord, N.H. Neko Jones added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Pointers while Zach Mihok had nine points, eight rebounds and two steals.

Women's lacrosse

Mitchell College dropped its season opener to Saint Joseph, 22-8, in West Hartford. Daniella Holland scored five goals and added an assist for the Mariners while Hannah Corrigan had two goals and one assist and Lindsey Fairbank scored a goal.

Men's indoor track

All-American Josiah Davis ran a season best 1:155.21 to win the 800-meter race during Coast Guard's 57-44 loss to Eastern Connecticut. The Bears also picked up wins from Antonia Rivera in the shot put (37 feet, 2.5 inches) and weight throw (34-7.5), Tanner Johnson in the high jump (6-3.25), Michael Samson in the mile (4:32.15), Adam VanDeren in the 5,000 (16:01.88) and the 4x400 relay team of Jake Cordova, Logan Haynia, Davis and David Loomis (3:32.07).

Women's indoor track

— Coast Guard set three facility records during a 68-42 win over Eastern Connecticut: Maeve Roach (mile, 5:00.54), Mia Huncharek (5,000, 18:33.25) and the 4x400 relay team of Rachel Bubeck, Elise Birkhaeuser, Roach and Taylor Winters (4:16.15). Other CGA winners were Hannah Jamison in the 400 (1:05.4), Winters in the 800 (2:29.08), Madison Garrigus in the pole vault (10-6), Kelley Wade in the long jump (16-7.75) and triple jump (32-8.5), Kalea Salang in the shot put (37-9.5) and Leilani Salang in the weight throw (52-10.25).

Boys' basketball

— Old Lyme scored the game's final four points to beat Coginchaug 50-47 in the Shoreline Conference. The Wildcats (5-3) trailed 48-47 when Caden Monte hit a jump shot with less than a minute to go to give Old Lyme a 48-47 lead and Jacob Ritchie added two free throws with five seconds to play. Ritchie finished with 16 points while Colbe Andrews had 13 and Frank Sablone 10.

Girls' basketball

— Izzy Pazzaglia scored 20 points as East Lyme won its first game with a 36-27 victory over Montville in an ECC South game. The Vikings are 1-5. Maya Hillman had 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Indians (1-5).

H.S. indoor track

— Fitch hosted an indoor meet against Stonington that was held outdoors with no team scores recorded. In the boys' meet, Stonington had a double-winner in Joshua Mooney, who won the 300-meter dash (39.5 seconds) and 55 hurdles (8.4) while Fitch won the 4x200 (1:41.6) and 4x400 (3:55.0) with the same four runners — Fernando Coreas, Om Patel, Thomas Williams and Josh Letellier.

In the girls' race, Stonington's Helena Hoinsky won the 300 (48.8), Megan Detwiler the 600 (1:58.4) and the team of Hoinsky, Detwiler, Rachel Sabbadini and Amelia Caron won the 4x400 relay (4:49.3), while Fitch's Kelsi Ursini won the 1,600 (6:04.3) and Amaris Johnson, Ashley Spreng, Avery Lyons and Natalia Ryan team up to win the 4x200 relay (1:57.4).

Boys' fencing

— East Lyme swept NFA in an ECC meet, defeating the Wildcats 7-2 in foil and 6-3 in epee.

Girls' fencing

— NFA defeated East Lyme in an ECC meet, winning the foil 7-2 and epee 6-3.
