LOCAL ROUNDUP: Hazleton Area laxers edged by Abington Heights

Apr. 8—The Hazleton Area girls' lacrosse team dropped a 7-5 Wyoming Valley Conference verdict to Abington Heights on Wednesday in Hazle Township.

Meaghan Drennan had two goals for the Lady Cougars, Riley Hudock scored two goals and had an assist, and Grace Gudich also scored for Hazleton Area.

Hudock won nine draw controls and had the most shots on goal, while Hudock and Drennan had the most ground ball recoveries.

Abby Bellas was in goal for the Lady Cougars, making six saves.

Hazleton Area will visit Scranton Prep Thursday.

H.S. Tennis Crestwood 4 Wyoming Seminary 1

Crestwood defeated Wyoming Seminary for the first time since the Comets' program started in 1996, keeping them undefeated on the season.

The Comets won the first two singles matches, as Ben Ziegler topped Keefer Wu 6-3, 6-3; and Julien Lacoste beat Vaughn Kutish 6-0, 6-1.

Seminary (3-1) won the third singles match, with Artur Gilicinski beating Kurt Grenzberg 6-0, 6-2.

Crestwood (4-0) swept the doubles portion of the match to win going away. At first doubles, Alex Covelens and Noah Partington rallied past Amin Ali and Ryan Chun (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Ryan Kostiuk and Brayden Fenwick teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Alex Lee and Marco Magnotta (6-1, 6-0).

Holy Redeemer 5 Hazleton Area 0

The Royals won four of the five matches in straight sets, and the other by forfeit to down Hazleton Area.

At first singles, Holy Redeemer's Will Wolfgang beat Kittrick Danzeisen (6-2, 6-0); at No. 2 Matt Schuler topped Cameron Zynel (6-0, 6-0); and at No. 3 Caleb Hurley defeated Maxwell Hsiao (6-3, 6-1).

Holy Redeemer's Hunter Wesolowski and Saji Alam blanked Jakob Narrow and Bryce Greco (6-0, 6-0) at first doubles.

H.S. Track and Field Boys Nativity 76 Mahanoy Area 72

Alex Mathers (800, 1,600, 3,200) swept the distance events and Nativity won two of the three relays to edge Mahanoy Area in a Division II meet.

Cody Miller (300 hurdles, triple jump, high jump) also won three events for Nativity.

Ben Terry (100, 200) and Craig Derr (shot put, javelin) each won two events for the Bears.

Holy Redeemer broke the game open with a five-run third inning en route to the WVC Division 2 victory.

Freshman Kayla Gist's RBI single in the bottom of the third accounted for the game's lone run. Mollie Corbett had the winners' other hit.

High-scoring Isabella Caporuscio poured in nine goals and Crestwood notched its third straight win by beating Wyoming Seminary on Tuesday.

Grace Pasternick scored a pair of goals, and teammates Kelsey Kulak and Julia Johnson and solo scores for the Lady Comets (3-0).

Seven different Crestwood players had an assist, and goalkeeper Avery Bogdon made 10 saves in the win.

Lily Kutz scored four of Wyoming Seminary's six goals.
