LOCAL ROUNDUP: High Point Central edges NW Guilford in Metro golf

Apr. 21—SUMMERFIELD — High Point Central's boys finished with a 152 total and nipped Northwest Guilford by two strokes on Monday at Greensboro National Golf Club.

Adam Peacock shot 37 to lead the Bison. Davis DeLille and Hunter Busick each shot 38, and Ian White added a 39.

Emma Carlisle Neibauer was the only girl to compete for Central and shot 36.

AT MEADOWLANDS

WALLBURG — Oak Grove swept a Central Carolina 2A Conference match Monday at Meadowlands.

Oak Grove's boys finished with a 152 total. West Davidson was second at 163 and North Davidson third at 186.

Cayden Bryner and Michael Morris tied for medalist honors at par 35. Calvin Hawkins of West shot 36 and Trey Benson of Oak Grove was fourth at 38.

Oak Grove's girls posted 119, followed by North (151) and West (171).

Sarah Stewart of the Grizzlies was medalist with a 38 and edged teammate Emma Maddock by a shot. Kylee Wenmoth of North was third at 41.

AT TANGLEWOOD

CLEMMONS — High Point Christian won a three-team nonconference match Monday at Tanglewood.

The Cougars posted a score of 154, followed by Calvary Day with a 166 and Forsyth Home Educators with a 171.

Jace Harris led the way with a 34, while Jared Waterer had a 37, Cam Malboeuf had a 41 and Ryan Tuttle had a 42.

AT HEMLOCK

WALNUT COVE — Bishop McGuinness finished second in a match Monday at Hemlock Golf Course.

South Stokes prevailed with a 145 total, followed by the Villains at 154 and North Stokes at 203. Counting scorers for Bishop were Daniel Jones (36), Sam Haggas (37), Josh Fisher (39) and Tyler Pesavento (42).

SOCCER SW GUILFORD, GLENN

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford scored four goals in each half and defeated Glenn 8-0 in a nonconference match Monday at Southwest.

Kendall France had three goals and one assist to lead the Cowgirls (8-1-1), while Laura Ortiz scored two goals and Maddie Vaughn had one goal and two assists.

Kaitlyn Wykoff and Bella Tkatch each added one goal and one assist, while Peyton Flynn and Paige Gowdy had one assist apiece. Laurel Collins got the shutout in goal.

WHEATMORE, PROVIDENCE GROVE

FRANKLINVILLE — Ellie Garrison scored four goals and Wheatmore downed Providence Grove 9-0 in a PAC-7 2A match that was stopped in the last two minutes because of a mercy rule Monday at Providence Grove.

Izzy Ringley and Summer Bowman each scored two goals for the Warriors and Mikalah Walls had one.

Bowman dished three assists, Kara Cromer two and Ringley one. Victoria Lowe grabbed six saves in goal.

BISHOP, E. SURRY

KERNERSVILLE — Emily Silva fashioned a hat trick and Bishop McGuinness defeated East Surry 9-0 in a Northwest 1A match Monday at Bishop.

Anna Krawczyk, Claire Clampett, Justine Grimsley, Addison Vitola, Mikayla Ebel and Sunita Agarwala added a goal each for the Villains, who led 6-0 at the half.

Clampett assisted on two goals. Krawczyk, Olivia Henn, Addison Vitola and Silva were credited with an assist each.

Emily Agejew grabbed three saves as the Villains improved to 9-1-0.

East Surry, which was outshot 24-3, dropped to 1-7-1.

SE GUILFORD, HP CENTRAL

PLEASANT GARDEN — All the scoring came in the second half as Southeast Guilford defeated High Point Central 3-1 in a nonconference match Monday at Southeast.

The Bison dipped to 8-0 overall.

OAK GROVE, WEST DAVIDSON

MIDWAY — Oak Grove turned back visiting West Davidson 3-1 in a Central Carolina 2A match Monday.

Haley Long scored two goals for the Grizzlies (6-3 overall, 3-3 CCC), who led 2-0 at halftime. Maggie Gazzara also scored while Skylar Coogle had an assist.

Avery Ray made four saves in goal.

HP CHRISTIAN, CARY CHRISTIAN

HIGH POINT — High Point Christian lost 7-1 against Cary Christian in nonconference girls soccer Monday at Correll-Morris Field.

The Cougars dropped to 6-6 overall.

E. DAVIDSON, C. DAVIDSON

LEXINGTON — Central Davidson blanked East Davidson 2-0 in a Central Carolina 2A match at Central on Monday.

The Golden Eagles dipped to 4-4-1 overall and 2-3 in the CCC.

LEDFORD, SALISBURY

SALISBURY — Ledford lost 8-0 against undefeated Salisbury in Central Carolina 2A Conference girls soccer Monday at Salisbury.

The Panthers dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

TRINITY, JORDAN MATTHEWS

SILER CITY — Jordan Matthews scored once in each overtime and defeated visiting Trinity 2-0 in a PAC-7 2A match Monday.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-7-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the conference.

SOFTBALL WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CHARLOTTE LATIN

CHARLOTTE — Wesleyan Christian downed Charlotte Latin 16-4 on Monday at Latin.

Hallie Allred went 2 for 3 at the plate, scored four runs, drove in two and stole two bases. She was also the winning pitcher, striking out four and walking three with no earned runs allowed.

Kyla Fjeld was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Bella Dunning drove two runs. Lila Allred got the save in the circle and also finished with two stolen bases.

HP CHRISTIAN, SOUTHLAKE CHRISTIAN

WALLBURG — High Point Christian rocked SouthLake Christian 22-1 in three innings Monday in nonconference softball at Wallburg Baptist Church.

Maci Burkhart went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and five RBIs to lead the Cougars (6-3). Laci Jarrell added two hits and three RBIs, while Sarah Carter also had two hits — including a double — and three RBIs.

Lexi Hall, Carter and Sarah Kate Carr combined to pitch a no-hitter.

GLENN, REAGAN

PFAFFTOWN — Glenn smashed 16 hits and defeated Reagan 13-6 in Central Piedmont 4A Conference action Monday at Reagan.

Erika Clinard went the distance in the circle for the Ladycats. She allowed 10 hits and two earned runs, walked two and struck out five.

WIth the score tied 5-5 after four innings, Glenn (3-7, 2-5 CPC) took control with six runs in the fifth and added two in the seventh.

Sydney Parsons went 3 for 4 with a double and stolen base, Riley Joyce was 4 for 5 with a double, and Hagen Shull went 3 for 3.

OAK GROVE, W. DAVIDSON

CLEMMONS — Oak Grove defeated host West Davidson 5-3 in a nonconference game Monday at West.

Down 1-0, the Grizzlies scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh before the Titans rallied for two.

Alissa Russ went 3 for 4 while Allie Johnston had a hit and three RBIs to lead Oak Grove (8-2). Julie Gadd added two hits and an RBI, while Aliyah Compton and Emily Roumillat each had two hits. Kady Livesay also had an RBI.

Russ, Compton and Roumillat each had a double, while Johnston had a home run.

Russ pitched 42/3 innings, striking out three, while Shae Grainger pitched 21/3 innings, striking out four.

HIGH POINT — High Point Christian topped Westchester Country Day 7-2 at Willow Creek on Monday

GREENSBORO — Southwest Guilford blanked Smith 9-0 in a Piedmont Triad 3A match at Smith on Monday.

Singles winners for the Cowboys (7-2, 5-1 PTC) were Parker Perry, Tim Vo, Tommy Lacey, Rhett Pressley plus two walkovers. Southwest doubles winners included Jacob Rosen/Daniel Etheredge and Sam Chandler/Davis Abernathy.

BISHOP, S. STOKES

WALNUT COVE — Bishop McGuinness swept South Stokes 9-0 in a Northwest 1A match Monday at South Stokes.

Singles winners for the Villains (8-1) were Luca Pestana, Bobby Peters, Grant Wilson, Timothy Hackman, Connor Whalen and Joshua Hanflick.

Bishop's doubles winners included Pestana/Peters, Wyatt Simmons/Ian Clark and Whalen/Evan Sturgill.

South Stokes dropped to 0-5.

LEDFORD, N. DAVIDSON

WELCOME — Ledford won all but two singles matches and defeated North Davidson 7-2 in a Central Carolina 2A Conference match Monday at North. The Panthers improved to 8-0.

Singles winners for Ledford included Sam Kruse, Joe Lamb, Rafal Kostraba and Jake Queen. Kruse/Queen, Kostraba/Josh Gross and Lamb/Brennen Norton won in doubles for the Panthers.

OAK GROVE, EAST DAVIDSON

MIDWAY — Oak Grove swept East Davidson 9-0 in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys tennis Monday at Oak Grove.

Eli McNeil, Brady Weisner, Parker Frost, Justin Gadd, Nick Morris and Chris Schmitt won in singles for the Grizzlies (5-3 overall, 5-3 CCC), while McNeil/Weisner and Frost/Gadd won in doubles.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

WESLEYAN, CARLISLE

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Wesleyan Christian blanked the Carlisle School 9-0 on Monday.

Logan Prillaman, Duncan Bell, Ben McCain, John Wagner, Luke Rudolph and Lucas Newton won singles matches for the Trojans. Prillaman/Quinn Welch, Jaden Difoggio/Judah Reitnour and Matthew Casteen/Isaiah McCarthy won in doubles.

THOMASVILLE, LEXINGTON

LEXINGTON — Thomasville fell 9-0 against Lexington in Central Carolina 2A Conference boys tennis at Lexington.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-9 overall and 0-9 in the conference.

HPU SPORTS WOMEN'S LACROSSE

CHARLOTTE — Abby Hormes of High Point University was picked the Big South Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for matches played April 12-18, the conference announced Tuesday.

Hormes scored 18 goals and added three assists in High Point's three matches last week. After she scored a match-high six times and won seven draw controls in a road victory at Longwood on Wednesday, she added five goals and a pair of assists in the Panthers' home triumph over Radford on Saturday.

The senior closed her week with seven of her team's 13 goals in a narrow setback to Liberty on Sunday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian launched 17 hits and defeated Westchester Country Day 16-6 in middle school baseball Monday at Westchester.

Giving up one hit and striking out two in 2 1/3 scoreless innings, Roddy Woodard closed out the game on the mound.

Leading hitters for Wesleyan were Cole Bowman (3 for 4, four RBIs), Neil Swindell (3 for 3 with two RBIs) and Woodard (3 for 4 with one RBI).

HITOMS RE-SIGN CAIN, McCULLOUGH

THOMASVILLE — The High Point-Thomasville HiToms have re-signed Avery Cain from King University and Brody McCullough from Wingate for this summer's summer collegiate baseball season.

Both plays played for the HiToms last summer when the team won the Coastal Plain League Mid-Atlantic Division championship.

Cain — a former Ledford and Post 87 standout — made eight appearances for the HiToms last summer. He earned second-team All-CPL honors with a 1.37 ERA, 19 strikeouts and just one walk in posting a 3-0 record.

McCullough, a Lexington native, earned a first-team All-CPL selection last summer. He appeared in seven games, including six out of the bullpen, and posted a 0.63 ERA.

An item in Tuesday's local roundup should have said David DeLille of High Point Central tied for third in the 36-hole Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) Sapona Junior Open at Sapona golf Club in Lexington.
