Local roundup: Mendez, Nulick lead Stonington past Waterford

Oct. 6—STONINGTON — Maddie Mendez scored twice and Hannah Nulick had a goal and three assists as Stonington remained unbeaten in the Eastern Connecticut Conference with a 5-0 win over Waterford in a field hockey match on Tuesday night.

Sam Harris and Alex Fidrych also scored goals and Sandy McGugan had an assist for the Bears (7-1, 6-0). Ilyanna Rivera made 10 saves for Waterford (2-6-1, 1-4-1).

In other games:

— Bridget O'Leary scored on goal and assisted on the other as Fitch defeated Woodstock Academy 2-0 in the ECC. Ashleigh Holmes scored the other goal for the Falcons (6-2, 4-1).

Girls' soccer

— Lynaisha Quinones scored a second-half goal to lift New London to a 1-0 win over Wheeler. New London is 2-6 and Wheeler is 3-4.

— Maya Terwilliger scored twice as Stonington beat NFA 2-1. Carly Constantine assisted on both goals for the Bears (6-3).

— Casey Beauregard and Laura Farquhar scored two goals each as Killingly beat Fitch 6-0. Kitara Pottebaum made 13 saves for Fitch (1-9).

— Alexis Fenton scored both goals, including a lofted shot past the goalie on a pass from Lyla Powers in the second half, as unbeaten Old Lyme defeated East Hampton 2-1 in the Shoreline Conference on Monday. Fenton's first goal for the Wildcats (4-0-4, 3-0-4) came less than a minute into the match on a pass from Ali Kyle. Freshman goalie Olivia Kelly made nine saves for Old Lyme.

H.S. swimming

— Grace Liu won three events as East Lyme remained unbeaten with an 88-82 win over Waterford in an ECC meet. Liu won the 200-yard individual medley (2:30.53), 100 freestyle (1:01.66) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.72). Nikki Hahn was a double winner for East Lyme, taking the 200 freestyle (2:03.55) and 500 freestyle (5:27.53).

Sandra Kirvelevicius and Makenna Harms also won events and combined with Hailey Newton, Grace Xu, Anna Lu, Lauren Hinckley, Hannah Socha and Vicky Lin to win two relays for the Vikings (4-0, 4-0). Camille Caldrello and Isabelle Bove-Dumin won events for Waterford (1-5, 1-3) and Erin Gerboth, Elizabeth Saucier, Bove-Dumin and Julia Gathy teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay.

— Addison Fulling and Delaney Reck won two events each as Fitch/Stonington/New London beat NFA 103-64 in an ECC meet. Fulling won the 200 freestyle (2:08.82) and 500 freestyle (5:41.06) and Reck won the 100 freestyle (57.63) and 100 backstroke (1:04.50). Sophia Pacheco also won an event for Fitch (4-1, 3-1) and teamed with Anna Orphanides, Sian Crespo, Sarah Tarinelli, Fulling and Reck to win two relays. NFA is 3-3, 2-2.

H.S. volleyball

— Kiera Stewart had 19 points and Grace Galarneau had 17 digs as Bacon Academy beat Montville 25-23, 25-20 and 25-16 in an ECC Division III match. Jen Whipple had 11 kills, Leah Brown had five kills and Emma Mancuso had three assists and a block for Bacon (8-2, 3-0). Maya Hillman had 12 kills and four aces, Abby Luyten had nine assists and Christina Winstead had five digs, four kills and two aces for Montville (5-6, 1-2).

— Norwich Tech beat Putnam 3-1 in a nonleague match. Autumn Lovett had 18 assists, two kills, two blocks, two digs and two aces for Norwich Tech (6-4), which won 28-26, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-16.

College volleyball

— Amanda Dake hit .526 with 10 digs and a match-high 13 kills as Coast Guard beat Mt. Holyoke 3-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match. Sophia Galdamez had 12 kills, Destiny Johnson had eight kills, Noelle Tursky had 31 assists, Kaela France had 15 digs and Carmen Zipf had 11 digs for the Bears (11-4, 5-1), who won 25-15, 25-17, 20-25 and 25-12.

Men's soccer

— No. 23 Coast Guard lost to Wesleyan 1-0 in a nonleague match. Evan O'Brien scored in the eighth minute for Wesleyan (5-2-1). John Vaaler made six saves for Coast Guard (8-2-1).

Boys' soccer

— Norwich Tech beat Grasso Tech 4-1 in a Connecticut Technical Conference game. Fabricio Gonzalez scored for Grasso (1-6-1).

— East Hampton beat Old Lyme 2-1 in a Shoreline Conference game. Andres Silberberg scored, David Evers had an assist and Jonah Lathrop made 10 saves for Old Lyme (2-6, 2-4).

College golf

— Mitchell College finished third at the MASCAC men's championship in Pittsfield, Mass. Mitchell's Michael McCarthy finished third and Nick Knisel was fourth to earn first-team all-conference honors. Teammate Shamus McLean of Groton was sixth and made the second team.
