Local roundup: Old Lyme earns return trip to Shoreline softball title game

May 25—CROMWELL — Maddie Hubbard's bunt drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning and third-seeded Old Lyme defeated No. 2 Cromwell 3-1 in the Shoreline Conference softball tournament semifinals on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (17-5) will play No. 5 North Branford in a rematch of the 2021 Shoreline final on Thursday at a site and time to be determined. North Branford upset No. 1 Haddam-Killingworth 5-0 in the other semifinal.

Jamie Bucior added a single, triple and RBI while Emma Bayor doubled and scored a run in the seventh. Bayor was the winning pitcher, allowing no earned runs and striking out eight.

In other games:

— Sydney Lyon contributed a single, double and two RBI as third-seeded Fitch routed No. 6 Woodstock Academy 11-1 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I first-round game. Grace Jenkins, Grace Cosmopoulos and Maerin Lyon each added two hits and Charlotte Cabral was the winning pitcher for the Falcons (13-8), who will play No. 2 Waterford in Wednesday's semifinals at Veterans Field in Niantic.

— No. 4 NFA eliminated No. 5 East Lyme 10-3 in the ECC Division I first round. Hannah Daniewicz was 2-for-2 for the Wildcats (14-7) with a double, two stolen bases, two runs and an RBI while Madisyn Hagberg-Porter had a single, double, two runs and an RBI, Nikki Schulze was 2-for-3 with two runs and Madison Waltke drove in three runs. Ava Roach had three hits and Julia Smith two doubles for the Vikings (10-11). NFA will play No. 1 Ledyard on Wednesday in Niantic.

— No. 3 Lyman Memorial scored two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead and went on to beat No. 6 Windham 4-1 in the ECC Division II first round. Kassidy LaTour threw a two-hitter, striking out 11 and walking two, and Rayne Bobbi chipped in two hits and an RBI and Lena-Marie Byers had two singles. Lyman (17-4) will play No 2 St. Bernard in the semifinals on Wednesday at Griswold.

— Morgan Cook and Caity Flynn each had a single and double for No. 2 Norwich Tech in a 15-6 loss to No. 6 Wolcott Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference semifinals. Gabby Fedus added a triple for the Warriors (14-5).

— Caylee Cliett and Sam Money both went 3-for-4 in Ledyard's 5-2 win over Fitch on Monday. Aaliyah Amidon struck out five for the Colonels (15-5), who have won nine straight, while catcher Paige Perkins threw out three runners trying to steal. The Falcons are 12-8.

H.S. baseball

— No. 7 East Lyme jumped in front with a six-run second inning, beating No. 10 New London 9-0 in an ECC tournament play-in round game. Gavin O'Brien and A.J. Montejano each had two hits and two RBI while John Bureau had a solo home run for the Vikings (12-9). Landon Hill had two singles for the Whalers (10-11). East Lyme plays No. 2 Fitch, the host, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

— Quinn Sylvia pitched a two-hitter and struck out seven while going the distance in No. 8 Waterford's 3-0 shutout of No. 9 St. Bernard in an ECC tournament play-in round game. Sean Salvador had two RBI while Evan McCue doubled and Anthony Jessuck singled and scored a run for the Lancers (14-7). Topher Tonucci and Ethan Chavez each had a single for the Saints (10-10). Host Waterford will face top-seeded Bacon Academy in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

H.S. boys' golf

— Brandon Tavares recorded five birdies on the way to a 3-under par 33 to lead Stonington past Wheeler 7-0 at Stonington Country Club. Cam O'Connor had a 35 for the Bears (9-8), who finished with 156 strokes. Kieran Boscoe led the Lions (7-6) with a 35.

— Morgun Whittaker earned medalist honors with a 38 in Montville's 5-2 win over NFA at Norwich Golf Course. Cam DeCecco had a 39 for Montville (14-2). Costa Kapilotis won his match with a 43 for the Wildcats (7-8).

— Medalist Nate McCormack fired a 39 and won his match at No. 2, leading Fitch past Plainfield 6-1. Jack Kramer had a 40 to win at No. 1 for the Falcons (9-6).

— Tyler Moore shot a 38 to earn medalist honors in East Lyme's 7-0 sweep of Griswold at River Ridge Golf Course. Ben Caron and Jack Bucko each had a 46 for the Vikings (9-9). The Wolverines are 2-11.

— Norman Maranda had a 47 and Nathan Sylvestre a 52 in Grasso Tech's 210-220 win over Goodwin Tech in a Connecticut Technical Conference match at Pequot Golf Course. The Eagles are 8-9, 8-8.

H.S. girls' golf

— NFA finished with a season's best 208 strokes in a win over host Woodstock, which had 225. Medalist Molly Plecan had a career-best 41 and Caitlin Daley had a 50 for the Wildcats, who improved to 11-1-1 overall, 10-0 in the conference.

College softball

— Eastern Connecticut State University sophomore pitcher Alexis Michon, a Montville graduate, was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American first team while graduate outfielder Cassie Woods, a Fitch graduate, made the second team for the second straight year.

Michon and Woods helped the third-ranked Warriors (43-5) advance to the Division III World Series starting Thursday in Salem, Va. The Warriors will play Trine University at 6:30 p.m.

Boys' lacrosse

— Demetri Ryan had five goals and three assists as Norwich Tech/Windham Tech finished its regular season 8-8 with a 10-9 win over Ledyard-Griswold. Dylan Relaz added three goals and one assist for the Warriors while Josh Lodyko had two goals and one assist and goalie Michael Joly made 16 saves.
