Local roundup: Old Lyme returns to Class S girls' tennis final

Jun. 3—OLD LYME — The Old Lyme girls' tennis team is as locked in as its been all spring.

The top-seeded Wildcats swept their doubles matches and beat No. 4 Litchfield, 6-1, in Thursday's CIAC Class S semifinal match and gave themselves a chance to repeat as state champions.

Old Lyme (22-0) will play in Saturday's final at Wesleyan University at a time to be announced. It will face the winner of Friday's semifinal between No. 2 Holy Cross and No. 3 Westbrook.

"We played Litchfield in the finals last year and we won, 5-2, and that was one of our closest matches," Wildcats head coach Lauren Rahr said. "We knew going into (Thursday) that they always have really strong singles players and our doubles (teams) are always excited to play no matter who they're playing.

"The girls (have been) very focused this week. Overall, they've been more focused than I've probably seen them all season. After the match, I was like, 'girls' we did it! We're in the finals. This is huge.'. And they (responded) like there's (still) a job to be done. .... I felt like I was more excited than them. I'm glad that they're focused."

The doubles teams of Livie Bass-Alexis Fenton, Aggie and Beatrice Hunt and Izzy Reynolds-Olivia Schaedler all won in straight sets for Old Lyme. Sam Tan, Callie Bass and Elaina Morosky won in straight sets in number two-four singles, respectively, too.

Boys' tennis

— Second-seeded Granby swept the doubles matches to edge No. 7 Stonington, 4-3, in a Class S quarterfinal. Tucker Callahan, Matthew Turrisi and Jackson Conlon all won in three sets at number one-three singles, respectively, for Stonington (13-5).

Softball

— Eighth-seeded Wolcott knocked off No. 9 Stonington, 10-1, in a CIAC Class M second round game. Kelsea Anderson went 2-for-3 and Madi Allard, Carli LoPresto, Maddie Mendez and Maddy Stepski all singled for Stonington (18-5), the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II tournament champion.

— Six players from local high schools were named to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association all-state softball teams. Maddie Burrows of Waterford, Samantha Money of Ledyard and Maddie Southers of Fitch were named to the Class L team, Maddy Stepski of Stonington made the Class M team and Rylee Benway of Lyman Memorial and Ava Roth of Old Lyme were named to the Class S team.

Girls' track

— Savannah Soleau placed second in the shot put (38-5.25) and javelin (110-3) and fourth in the discus (103-9) to help East Lyme place fifth at Wednesday's Class M championships at New Britain's Willow Brook Park.

Windsor won the meet with 106.5 points and the Vikings scored 61.75. Fitch placed 20th (7.5), Waterford was 21st (6) and New London tied for 23rd (4.75)

Lauren Hinckley was runner-up in the triple jump (34-2) and Sophia Seguin finished third (34-1.5) for East Lyme while Sjodin Fedikovich took third in the javelin (98-7) and seventh in the pole vault (8-6). Also, Ava Pitruzzello placed fourth in the 400 (1:01.26), Lacey-Lee Keramidas finished fifth in the pole vault (9-0) and Jayla Washington finished sixth in the long jump (15-9).

The Vikings' 4x100 relay team of Sydney Arustei, Aubrey Jorgensen, Grace Wadsworth and Hinckley finished sixth, Hailey DeNucci took seventh in the javelin (93-7) and Grace Blackwood tied for seventh in the high jump (4-8) and Kennedy Holsapple finished eighth in the 1,600 (5:35.58).

Amaris Johnson tied for fifth in the 100 (13.21) for Fitch while Karen Johnson-Hoffman was seventh (13.22). Emma Forde also placed seventh in the 800 (2:22.02).

Waterford's Colleen Corman placed eighth in the 300 hurdles (51.09) and teamed with Aimee Girard, Erica Mugovero and Avery Maiese to finish sixth in the 4x800 relay (10:29.15). Maiese also took seventh in the 3,200 (11:49.06).

Darielys Arnold, Annisah White, Jah'Nyah Maddox-Williams and Akheena Farrior-Parcak finished fifth in the 4x100 relay (51.18) for New London and Serenity Lancaster tied for seventh in the high jump (4-8).

Boys' track

— Blake Harris took third in the 110 hurdles (15.53) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (42.41) for East Lyme at the Class MM championships. Windsor won the team title (91) and the Vikings were ninth (28.50). Nicholas Vogel was runner-up in the pole vault (12-0) and Langston Camerlin tied for seventh (10-6), Brendan Fant finished third in the 1,600 (4:25.91) and Sean McCauley was sixth in the 3,200 (9:51.75) for East Lyme.

H.S. baseball

— No. 16 St. Bernard lost to top seed St. Paul in a Class S second-round game on Wednesday, 3-1 in eight innings. The Saints (11-11) took the lead in the top of the eighth when Luca Muscarella singled home Guiseppie Satti. St. Paul won when Casey Cerruto hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Aidan Whitten pitched seven shutout innings for St. Bernard.

Boys' golf

— NFA beat Valley Regional by forfeit on Wednesday. Max Weston was the medalist for NFA, which had a medal point of 174. Kyle Sikorski and Liam O'Neil each had 44s and Costa Kapilotis shot a 45 for the Wildcats (8-9).

Honors

— Norwich Tech placed three players on the Connecticut Technical Conference all-star softball team. Morgan Cook, Caitlyn Flynn and Khaiyanna Maldonado were selected and teammate Autumn Hanks received honorable mention.

Grasso's Tech Randy Vidal, Jaivon Velez and Jesus Sanchez made the CTC all-star baseball team along with Norwich Tech's Joshua Hanks and Chase Davidson. Camren Topkin of Norwich Tech received honorable mention.
