Local roundup: Sager, Sefransky earn multiple girls' lacrosse honors

Jun. 24—East Lyme's Sydney Sager and Fitch's Rita Sefransky have received multiple honors by USA Lacrosse and the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.

The two recent graduates were named Academic All-Americans by USA Lacrosse along with being named to the Academic all-state team and to the CHSCA Class M all-state first team.

They were joined on the Class M all-state first team by Waterford senior Emily Gates and Fitch senior Bridget O'Leary and were joined on the Academic all-state team by O'Leary and Stonington senior Ivy Goodman.

Goodman also made the Class S all-state first team along with Stonington sophomore Gabriella Dimock, Bacon Academy senior Skylar Gustavsen and Bacon senior Sarah Newton.

Earning a spot on the Class M all-state second team were East Lyme junior Abbie Belleville, East Lyme junior Dani Bruno, East Lyme junior Kaitlyn DiLoreto and Ledyard junior Jessica English.

Earning a spot on the Class S all-state second team were Stonington freshman Emma Logel, Old Lyme senior Emily Mesham and Montville junior Lily Tomczik.

H.S. basketball

— The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference and Rhode Island Interscholastic League will host the inaugural Jiggs Cecchini Holiday Basketball Challenge on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Mohegan Sun Arena. Ticket information and game times for the four games will be announced later, but the matchups have been set. A boys' doubleheader will feature East Catholic vs. Bishop Hendricken (Warwick) and Windsor vs. Classical of Providence. The girls' doubleheader will feature Holy Cross vs. St. Mary Academy-Bayview (Riverside) and Hamden vs. Ponaganset (North Scituate).

"The Rhode Island Interscholastic League is pleased to participate in what we hope will be an annual event in collaboration with our friends at the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference," RIIL executive director Mike Lunney said in a release. "The Cecchini Challenge will be a tremendous opportunity for student athletes and fans of high school basketball to be part of an environment that will be filled with fun and excitement during the holiday season."

The one-day event is named in honor of Robert "Jiggs" Cecchini, the retired Suffield High School principal, athletic director and coach who served as the longtime chairperson of the CIAC Boys Basketball Committee and was the driving force behind moving the state basketball championships to Mohegan Sun.

American Legion Zone VI

— Jason Wedge walked with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie and Norwich went on to defeat Moosup 9-6 in a Zone VI game. Wedge and Jake Savage, who had an RBI single in the fourth, had two hits apiece for Norwich (4-2) and Ty Pomroy was the winning pitcher in relief.

NECBL

— Jonathan Gonzalez (Stetson) allowed only five hits with six strikeouts over seven shutout innings as the Mystic Schooners defeated Martha's Vineyard 4-0 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Dodd Stadium. Stonington's Kevin Ferrer (UConn) went 2-for-4, including a two-run single in the third, for the Schooners (6-5) while Tucker Flint (UNC Greensboro) added a pair of singles.

District 10 LL baseball (9-11)

— Waterford defeated Groton 10-0 on Tuesday as Christian O'Connor, Cam Dlubac, Jace Brigham and Tyler Stark combined to pitch a no-hitter. Stark and Jax Nolda each had multiple hits and Griffin Fiano had a pair of sacrifice flies.

— Ledyard/Salem defeated East Lyme 11-10 as winning pitcher Milo Leaf (six strikeouts in 2.1 innings) had a walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning. Blake Morrison was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for L/S while Liam Samokar and Jamisen Burke added two hits and 1 RBI each. Dominic Allare had a hit and drove in three runs for East Lyme.

District 10 LL softball (10-12)

— Salem/Montville defeated Ledyard 12-6 on Wednesday as winning pitcher Sophia Gibson had eight strikeouts and Emma Van Dusen, Jaianna Lesniewski and Abby Daniewicz had two hits apiece. Emerson Beebe scored twice for Ledyard.

— Waterford defeated Groton/Mystic 6-0 on Wednesday as Gabrielle Fontaine pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts, Mia Majeski had three hits, Gabby Fontaine and Gianna Duzant had two hits apiece and Isabella Rush had a hit and drove in three runs.

District 10 LL softball (8-10)

— Waterford defeated Ledyard 16-14 on Tuesday night as winning pitcher Reese Firmin struck out 11, Sadie Silvestri and Gianna Vargas each had four hits and scored three runs, and Piper Barczak, Ava Vargas and Firmin had two hits apiece. Belle Bonser had two hits and scored twice for Ledyard.
