Mar. 13—WHITEVILLE — The St. Pauls boys soccer team earned a 5-1 win at Whiteville Friday to clinch the Three Rivers Conference championship.

St. Pauls (7-1-1 overall) finishes at 5-1 in the TRC, a half-game ahead of East Bladen (4-1) and a full game ahead of Red Springs (3-1).

Ayham Hajran scored a hat trick in the win for St. Pauls, who led 3-1 at halftime. Keni Verdugo-Gomez scored two goals for the Bulldogs.

"I knew Whiteville would have a little more defense," St. Pauls coach Brent Martin said. "I held Ayham off at first, to see where he would be the most valuable for us, where we could use his creativity."

The Bulldogs will await their playoff seeding as the TRC's top-seeded team. East Bladen and Red Springs will await potential at-large berths.

East Bladen football wins at Fairmont

The Fairmont football team lost its home opener against East Bladen 50-12 Friday.

"They're pretty good; they recovered three onside kicks, a couple big long runs," Fairmont coach George Coltharp said. "We're a young team trying to find our way."

Jahkeem Moore threw for two touchdowns in the loss. Ezekial Thompson and Quamel Pittman each had receiving touchdowns.

East Bladen is 2-0, both overall and in TRC play.

Fairmont (1-2, 0-2 TRC) plays next week at South Columbus.

Pinecrest tops Purnell Swett

The Purnell Swett football team lost 30-6 in Friday's game against Pinecrest.

Pinecrest (2-1, 2-1 Sandhills Athletic Conference) led 20-6 at halftime.

Purnell Swett (0-2, 0-2 SAC) put together a six-minute drive to start the game, but the drive ended in a turnover; Purnell Swett coach Stephen Roberson said the result of that possession set the tone for the game.

"Turnovers really snakebit us tonight. We had a couple of turnovers and just couldn't get on track after that," Roberson said. "Pinecrest did a great job of running the veer, and came out in the third quarter and punched us in the mouth, and made a two-score game a three-score game. We had opportunities in the first half to make it a one-score game."

Nate Henderson threw a touchdown pass to Garyen Maynor for the Rams.

Purnell Swett plays next week at Jack Britt.
