Local roundup: Stonington's Mooney leads CIAC decathlon after first day

Jun. 15—NEW BRITAIN — Stonington's Josh Mooney has taken the lead following the first day of the CIAC decathlon championship at Willow Brook Park on Tuesday.

The junior finished the first five events with 3,376 points, 131 better than Michael Johnson of Lewis Mills. The final five events will take place Wednesday starting at 10 a.m.

Mooney won the 100-meter dash in 11.17 seconds while adding seconds in the long jump (20 feet, 3 inches) and shot put (40-0.25). He also tied for fifth in the high jump (5-8) and was eighth in the 400 (52.66).

Griswold's Anthony Gaeta, who sits in 16th place with 2,784 points, won the shot put (40-5).

Among the other local competitors, Lyman Memorial's Justin Thuotte is ninth (2,972), Bacon Academy's Jake Martino is 14th (2,848), Stonington's Phoenix Glaza is 21st (2,685), Ledyard's Jackson Poulton is 38th (2,169), Lyman's Maxwell Hussey is 43rd (1,915), Fitch's Collin Riley is 46th (1,728) and Griswold's Logan Benoit is 50th (1,336).

In the girls' heptathlon, Ledyard's May Inyang is in third place after the first four events with 2,350 points. Shelton's Audrey Kozak will take the lead into Wednesday's final three events with 2,398 points.

Nine other local athletes are competing with Stonington's Nancy Inthasit in ninth (2,117), Bacon Academy's Megan Braga in 22nd (1,819), Lyman's Olivia Dunnack in 32nd (1,666), Bacon's Madison Simone in 34th (1,571), Bacon's Olivia Hightower in 40th (1,418), Stonington's Sophia Anderson in 42nd (1,362), Ledyard's Clare Inyang in 47th (1,148), Lyman's Kasey Cook in 48th (1,070) and Stonington's Katie Anbari in 51st (797).

May Inyang was the top local finisher in the shot put (1st, 32-8) and 100 hurdles (ninth, 16.57) while Inthasit was the top local finisher in the 200 (1st, 25.85) and Simone was the top local finisher in the high jump (8th, 4-7).

In addition, Ledyard's Kate Littler placed eighth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:53.08 with Rachel St. Germain of Somers winning in 7:13.25. Lyman's Magda Carpenter cracked the top 24 in 23rd place (8:27.96) followed by teammate Helen Blakeslee in 46th (9:05.62), Bacon's Jade Hostetler in 57th (9:51.33), Bacon's Caylin Davids in 60th (10:09.76), Bacon's Melinda McKenzie in 64th (11:36.36) and Bacon's Brooke Rodgers in 65th (11:36.75).

— The boys' and girls' hammer throw was held on Monday with Old Lyme's Dylan Sheehan finishing fourth in the boys' competition with a throw of 167-11 and Bacon's Jennifer Whipple finishing 11th in the girls' competition (88-0). Other local boys' finishers were Stonington's Anthony Marchigiano in 29th (94-8) and teammate Zachary Anderson in 33rd (82-5). Other local girls' finishers were East Lyme's Lacey-Lee Keramidas in 12th (86-8), Bacon's Natalie Chesnes in 16th (77-7) and NFA's Hannah Graham in 20th (71-11). Hillhouse's Gary Moore Jr. was the boys' winner (201-7) and Hillhouse's Olivia O'Connor was the girls' winner (143-3).

— The Mystic Schooners beat the Ocean State Waves 4-2 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Dodd Stadium. Tucker Flint (UNC Greensboro) had a double and a triple, Jimmy Chatfield (Yale) singled and doubled and Tristan McAlister (Mount St. Mary's) had two hits for the Schooners (3-2). Starting pitcher Josh O'Neill (Stony Brook) earned the win, allowing three hits and two unearned runs over five innings. He struck out five with two walks.
