LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wesleyan hires Woodward as athletic director

Jun. 10—HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian Academy has hired Joe Woodward as its athletic director, the school announced Wednesday.

He has been an assistant coach under C.J. Lee with the varsity boys basketball team and the head coach of the JV boys basketball team at Wesleyan. He replaces Elijah Denton as athletic director.

A New York native, Woodward moved to North Carolina in 2011 while with the U.S. Marine Corps, reaching the rank of sergeant and receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his service in Afghanistan.

He and his wife, Kailee, decided to stay in North Carolina, where Woodward has built a successful career in the medical sales industry. They have 4-year-old twins, Joella and Isabella, and 9-month-old Georgia Kate.

"As a parent I have been blessed by seeing Wesleyan's vision and mission at work and I am fully committed to it," Woodward said in a release from the school. "As a coach, I have enjoyed pouring into these young people on an individual basis. Now, as athletic director, my job and my desire is to take Wesleyan's athletic program to the next level in every aspect."

BASEBALL BISHOP McGUINNESS, NORTH STOKES

DANBURY — Bishop McGuinness topped North Stokes 4-0 in Northwest 1A Conference baseball Tuesday at North Stokes. Joe Crisculolo and Michael Foresman combined for the shutout on the mound for the Villains, who improved to 5-8 overall and 4-7 in the conference.

RAGSDALE, NW GUILFORD

GREENSBORO — Ragsdale lost 5-3 against Northwest Guilford in Metro 4A Conference baseball Tuesday at Northwest. Sam Ross had a double and two RBIs for the Tigers (9-4 overall, 8-4 conference), who scored three runs in the top of the sixth to tie it 3-3 but allowed two runs in the bottom half. Chad Carpenter, Caleb Harvey and Julian Abreu each added a hit. Nick Horkey struck out 3 in 41/3 innings before handing off to Carpenter for the final 12/3 innings.

WALLBURG — Oak Grove's boys and Ledford's girls each finished in third place in the team totals during Tuesday's Central Carolina 2A Conference track and field championships at Ledford.

Central Davidson won the boys team total with 167 points, followed by South Rowan (99), Oak Grove (77), Thomasville (66), Salisbury (64), West Davidson (56), Ledford (51.5), East Davidson (35), North Davidson (17.5) and Lexington (6).

North Davidson won the girls team total with 138.5 points, trailed by Salisbury (83), Ledford (80.5), South Rowan (80), East Davidson (75), Central Davidson (73.5), West Davidson (70.5), Oak Grove (67), Lexington (7) and Thomasville (2).

Jacob Murphy (pole vault — 12'0") and the girls 4x200 relay (Zoe Smith, Wanda Hairston, Dorian Yarbrough, Jessica Mabe) won for Oak Grove, which also got all-conference performances from Jeffery Jones (400m), Chloe Koper (800m), Carter Tyree (pole vault) and the boys 4x400 relay.

Dalton Zimmerman (400m — 49.36; 200m — 22.26) won for Ledford, which also got all-conference performances from Samantha Flynn (100m hurdles; 200m), Brea White (400m) and Isaac Reyna (3200m).

East Davidson's Gracie Prevette won the 300m hurdles (52.12), Haley Eddinger won the long jump (15' 10.5"), and Ivan Olmedo was all-conference in the 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles.

Thomasville's Gabe Ray won the triple jump (41' 8.50"), while the Bulldogs won the 4x200 relay (Yu'Neeke Payne, Jalan Sanders, Cameron Walker, CJ Dickerson — 1:35.24). Cameron Walker (100m), CJ Dickerson (200m) and Josh Johnson (shot put) were all-conference.
