Local roundup: Zavala leads Fitch past New London

Apr. 19—NEW LONDON — Ramiro Zavala picked to the victory, had two hits and drove in two runs as Fitch beat New London 13-2 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I baseball game on Sunday.

Zavala combined with Charlie MacPherson to pitch a seven-hitter. Zavala allowed four hits over five innings with eight strikeouts and one walk. MacPherson struck out five with no walks over the final two innings.

Anthony Franco, Tate Scherer, Justin Porter and Zavala had two hits each, Ryan O'Connor, Franco and Zavala drove in two runs each and Alex DelCampo, Franco, Scherer and Porter each scored twice for Fitch (3-0, 3-0). Garrett Matson had two hits for New London (0-4, 0-3) and Angel Ovalle, Sean Raymond and Matson had doubles.

In other games:

— Walker Baillargeon had three hits and two RBI as St. Bernard beat Wheeler, 9-3, in an ECC Division II game on Saturday. Kolby Quinn had two hits, two RBI and two runs for the Saints (2-1, 2-1) and Guiseppie Satti tripled with two runs and two RBI. Starter Ethan Chavez also allowed four hits and struck out seven over four innings. The Lions are 0-2, 0-2.

College baseball

— Mitchell College collected 34 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Lesley in the New England Collegiate Conference. Mitchell (12-5, 5-1) won the opener 37-3 and the second game 9-4. Hunter Yaworski and Montville's Dougie DelaCruz each homered twice for the Mariners.

East Lyme's Owen Robbins and Yaworski had grand slams in Game 1 as Mitchell set school records for most runs and largest margin of victory and Yaworski homered twice and drove in eight runs. Steve Cochrane and DelaCruz homered in Game 2 and Montville's Kenny Heon pitched four hitless innings in relief for the win.

College softball

— Springfield College swept a doubleheader from Coast Guard, winning the opener 3-0 and the second game 6-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Yoshikoa Montalvo and Selena Serna had doubles in the opener and Julia Breidenthal had two hits in the second game for Coast Guard (6-4, 6-4).

— Lesley swept Mitchell in an NECC doubleheader, winning the opener 4-3 and taking Game 2 5-2 in eight innings. Hannah Lemke drove in two runs in the opener and Nene Capeles singled in a run in the second game for Mitchell (3-12, 1-7).

Men's track

— Connecticut College picked up four individual wins in a four-way week. Tufts won with a score of 239.5 followed by Trinity (132), Wesleyan (124.5) and Conn (98). Chris Koskinen won the pole vault at 14-9, breaking his school record of 14-1.25 and Zach Rivard won the discus with a throw of 121.6.

Bennett MacDougall won the 800 in 2:00.70 and Chris Verstandig won the 5,000 in 15:27.17. Conn's Matt Carter broke the school record in the 10,000 with a time of 30:35.34, beating the 30:53.77 by Adam Fitzgerald in 2003.

Men's rowing

— Coxswain Arthur Baltz helped the varsity 8 boat finish the 2,000 meter course in 7:06.1 Saturday at Lake Quinsigamond. Caleb Chiesa, Jack Walsh, Ben Meyer, Ben Chester, Hassan Rashid, Alex Saucedo, Jake Upton and Matt Timoney comprised the varsity boat. Coxswain Maggie Curtis-Hardy directed the second varsity 8 boat to a finish of 7:28.6. Jack Woodbury, Josh Cohan, Jimmy Morales, Joey Pimlott, Caleb Macenka, Suhkrit Narang, Brian Speers and Jack Aleska rounded out that boat.

College sailing

— Conn College's coed team finished eighth at the New England Sailing Association Championships on the Thames River. Aili Moffet, Charlotte Williams, Andrew Powers and Ali Tillinghast contributed to the A Division finish. On Saturday, Moffet and Williams helped Conn place eighth in the women's race.

Women's track

— Conn College's Julia Curran ran one of the fastest 10,000-meter times in the country on Saturday as the Camels finished third in a four-team NESCAC meet. Tufts won with 280 points followed by Wesleyan (144), Conn (133) and Trinity (92). Curran finished third in 36:49.45, the fourth best time this season.

The distance medley relay team of Michelle Gutowski, Mary Rusnock, Tarvis Hintlian and Meredith Cronin won in 13:00.03, breaking the school mark of 13:28.80 set in 1990. Conn's Malissa Lindsey won the 100 in 12.61 and was second in the 200 (26.44) while teammate Erica McSweeney was third in the 100 hurdles (16.90), fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:11.45), fourth in the triple jump (35-11.25) and fifth in the long jump (15-11).

H.S. boys' lacrosse

— Kellen Paparella scored five goals and Tyler Graham had four goals and two assists as Bacon Academy opened its season with a 13-3 win over Montville in an ECC Division II game on Saturday. Jack Holmes had a goal and three assists and Chase Goulet made seven saves for Bacon. Steven Turchetta made 22 saves for Montville (0-2, 0-2).
