Ventura County's school boards could see 24 seats occupied by new faces next year.

Another 39 incumbents appeared headed for another term as of Wednesday afternoon, when the latest ballot count was released.

Just over 3,000 votes, or about 1% of an estimated 285,000, were left to be counted across Ventura County after Wednesday's update. The small number of outstanding ballots leaves little margin for lagging candidates to overtake leaders in most of the school board races.

Candidates competed for 23 seats in the Nov. 8 election, vying to represent districts that oversee transitional kindergarten all the way up to community college.

Another 36 contests hand only a single candidate, leaving the post settled before ballots were even printed.

Four other seats had no candidates. Those will be filled by school board appointment.

The county's vote tabulators will resume processing ballots after the Thanksgiving holiday, with final certification due Dec. 8.
