Local school districts report downed trees, burst pipes, outages

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – After an ice storm made its way through western Oregon Tuesday afternoon, local schools are still assessing damages from the storm.

Portland, Beaverton and Salem schools have all reported concerns – from downed trees to burst pipes, and even outages.

PPS says Lane Middle School had a burst water pipe in one of its classrooms, and the water has since spread to several other rooms.

Officials say they had only taken a look at about half the 81 buildings to look for storm damage, but say there are burst pipes and other issues at some schools. They are still working to decide which schools may stay closed, or whether there could be delays.

Beaverton School District

At West Tualatin View Elementary School in Beaverton, a huge tree smashed down onto a corner of the building, taking out the covered play area. They are still managing burst pipes and flooding.

Other Elementary schools, including Ridgewood and Raleigh Park, have lost power. Meanwhile, Cedar Mill Beaverton Academy of Science and Engineering is experiencing burst pipes and boiler issues.

“We had a burst water line there. We had sinks that overflowed and made two of our classrooms literal ice rinks, so we have a lot of cleanup to do,” Shellie Bailey Shah of the Beaverton School District said.

The district is working to decide which schools will have to remain closed tomorrow, as about a dozen schools are still affected by the weather.

Salem-Keizer School District

Two elementary schools in Salem, Schirle Elementary and Harritt Elementary, have water damage and will be closed tomorrow. Officials say Salem’s Behavior Intervention Center will also remain closed.
