Local ski resort to open for first time this season after warm start to winter

A local ski resort will open for the first time this season tomorrow.

Mad River Mountain in Zanesfield will open for business Saturday at 10 a.m., General Manager Alajos Fiel confirmed to News Center 7.

“The team is hard at work getting everything pushed out to get us ready to open,” Fiel said.

That included “Team Blizzard” making manmade snow. While they’ve been doing that since November, today was “the first one that was really impactful.”

As shown on News Center 7 at 5:30, Fiel said that “diehards” would have already hit the slopes by now, but the warm weather has stopped that.

“Our biggest challenge is mother nature itself,” he said.

He’s trying to keep his morale high and hopes that the upcoming weather in the forecast will continue for the remainder of the winter.

While Fiel and everyone at Mad River Mountain aren’t certain about the potential loss of profit with opening late, they’re certain about being ready to open.

“We’re just really focused on what we can do and what we can control, and that’s being ready when Mother Nature allows us,” he said.
