Local Sports: Airport deals Ida first loss to lead off home showcase

CARLETON − Airport kicked off its two day, 28-team showcase event Thursday with an impressive 55-49 victory over Ida.

The Blue Streaks came into the game unbeaten with six straight wins to start the season.

Airport's young squad of mostly freshmen and sophomores has been up and down throughout the early season. The Jets (4-3) were up Thursday as they sealed their third-straight victory.

"We’re getting better day-by-day, practice-by-practice, game-by-game," Airport coach Darrell Mossburg said. "We believe we still can play better and what we’re looking for is good consistent play each and every possession.

"Rebounding is going to be number one that we will get better at. Ida did an outstanding job rebounding the ball I thought we were a little soft in the paint."

Airport led 24-20 at halftime, but outscored Ida 20-14 in the third quarter to take a 10-point advantage into the fourth.

Olivia Gratz led the Jets with 18 points and Jillian Baker added 13. Brenna Baker and Peyton Zajac added 9 apiece.

"Proud of Jillian as she played three quarters with four fouls," Mossburg said. "And (Brenna Baker) his a big three to sorta seal the deal (in the fourth quarter)."

Grace Capling scored 16 points to lead Ida, which fell to 6-1 overall.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bedford 49, South Lyon East 40

CARLETON − Victoria Gray scored 20 of her season-high 25 points in the second half to keep Bedford ahead of South Lyon East in the Airport Showcase Thursday.

Gray was 11-for-15 at the free-throw line, with 10 points from the charity stripe after halftime.

Bedford (7-0) trailed after the first quarter but rallied for a 22-19 halftime lead. That lead ballooned to 8 points by the final period.

Erie Mason 55, Dearborn AT 17

CARLETON − Erie Mason controlled both ends of the court Thursday against Dearborn Advance Tech at the Airport Showcase to pick up its second win of the season.

Mason led 16-5 after the first quarter and 34-7 at halftime. Advanced Tech scored just 10 points the rest of the way.

"We did a great job of controlling the pace of the game right off the tip," Mason coach Josh Sweigert said. "We were able to get some good looks at the basket and were able to convert. Our defensive pressure helped create some great offensive opportunities."

Kaylie Bash led the Eagles with 17 points, 6 steals and 3 assists, Emily Worden scored a career-high 14 points and collected 8 rebounds, Audrey Trainor had 6 points and 5 steals, and Bailey Meiring added 3 points, 3 steals and played very well defensively.

Summerfield 56, East Jackson 51

ADRIAN − Summerfield rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit to defeat East Jackson Thursday in the finals of the Adrian College Shootout.

East Jackson led 26-16 at halftime, but Summerfield quickly turned the tables to take a 1-point lead into the final period.

"It was a very, very physical game tonight, but I can’t tell you how proud I am of the way we came out and played in the second half," Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. "My assistant Trent Moody switched our defense and the girls responded and played a really great third quarter that was some of the best defense we played all season.

Abby Haller led the Bulldogs (7-1) with 27 points, including 20 in the second half. Destanee Smith scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, as well.

Haller is 13 points away from 1,000 for her career.

Jaeli Jones, Mayley Mannebach, Cami Taylor, Mia Miller, and Ava Fisher shined defensively.

East Jackson won the junior varsity game 49-46. Makenzie Wolfe scored 21 points for Summerfield, which fell to 6-2.

New Boston Huron finished 2-0 Thursday at the St. Mary Catholic Central Holiday Tournament.

Sisters Lila Clements (15 points) and Nina Clements (12 points) led a well-balanced Huron team that saw eight different girls score.

Huron (4-3) led 22-14 at halftime and pulled away with a 21-3 run in the third quarter.

CARLETON − A big second quarter Capital Homeschool Athletic Program (CHAP) pull away from Flat Rock for a win in the Airport Shwocase Thursday.

CHAP outscored the Rams 17-2 in the second to carry a 26-7 lead into halftime and then kept up the intensity in the second half.

"This was one of those games that we learn a lot from," Flat Rock coach Brian Kryk said. "CHAP is a very good team in all facets. We had some really good moments and some really bad moments, but we'll learn from this game and it will make us better when we resume league play."

Addison Kopp scored 11 to lead Flat Rock (3-4).

Emmanuel Christian 81, Whiteford 68

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Jerry Easter II showed why he is one of the top-50 rated sophomores in the nation, pouring in 40 points for Emmanuel Christian in the win over Whiteford on Thursday.

Easter scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, reached 40, and was pulled from the game.

Whiteford stayed close, especially early, trailing just 10-9 after the first quarter and 31-24 at halftime. Luke Rasor, who scored 24 to lead Whiteford, scored 15 points in the second half as the Bobcats tried to stay close.

A bucket by Rasor early in the third quarter made it 35-28, but East scored on back-to-back breakaways, then the Warriors got two triples by Nate Miles to go up 45-31.

Evan Parker scored 18 points and Hunter DeBarr 9 for the 1-3 Bobcats, who will play Lenawee Christian in the consolation game at Lourdes University in Sylvania on Friday.

PREP WRESTLING

Simons crowned champ

CANTON − Gibraltar Carlson's Timmy Simons went 4-0 and won the 157-pound bracket Thursday at the Plymouth Salem Elks Tournament.

Simons pinned Southgate Anderson's Jackson Sage just 0:59 into the championship bout.

In total, Carlson placed seven wrestlers on the podium in the tournament. Matthew Beach finished second at 215, Zachary Taylor was third at 150, Benett Szucs (106) and John Wallace (126) both placed fifth, Brendan Mitchell took sixth at 190, and Josh Stith was eighth at 165.
