Local Sports: Airport softball deals Jefferson first loss

CARLETON − Jefferson's softball team was flawless through its first nine games of the season.

But the Bears may have been caught with their foot off the gas pedal Friday as Airport took advantage of Jefferson's errors in a 10-0 mercy victory Friday afternoon.

The Jets piled on the pressure, out-hitting Jefferson 12-1.

RaeAnn Drummond led the way, finishing 3-for-3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. She knocked two doubles and also dominated in the pitching circle, allowing 1 hit and striking out 7 in 5 complete innings.

Olivia Tilley and Kaitlyn Poe added 2 hits and 2 RBI each. Drummond, Tilley, Hailey Boitnott, Peyton Zajac, Alayna McDaniel, and Kameryn doubled, and Poe hit a triple.

"Defensively, we were outstanding today," Airport coach Jessica Irwin said. "Hailey Boitnott had two great catches."

Brooke Payment had the lone hit for Jefferson.

"We gave up seven unearned runs, our defense was atrocious," Jefferson coach Chad Liptow said. "They kicked our butt in every phase of the game. Our players can not pick and choose when they want to be focused."

It was the first loss of the season for the Bears, who dipped to 9-1 overall.

PREP SOFTBALL

Bobcats brave rain

IDA − The Bobcats weren't scared of a little water Friday as Whiteford no-hit Ida in a 6-0 victory.

Karlei Conard and Unity Nelson combined for 17 strikeouts in the no-hitter during an on-and-off drizzle.

Shay Alexander and Aly VanBrandt led the offense with 2 hits apiece.

Summer Smith drew a walk and stole a base for Ida.

"We played a good game today," Ida coach Chelsea Wright said. "Girls played hard, didn't give up, and kept fighting. Lots of communication between the girls tonight. McKenna Tarry pitched a great game for us."

Daniels powers Milan

Leila Daniels had a big night with 2 home runs and 4 RBI to lead Milan to a 14-3 win over St. Mary Catholic Central on Friday.

Leadoff hitter Cami Heath provided a spark with 3 hits and Bella Kohn added 2 hits. Mariah Stines earned the win in the circle, allowing just 6 hits and striking out 7.

BOYS LACROSSE

Bedford slips by SMCC

TEMPERANCE − Blake Dlugosielski had five goals and two assists as Bedford won 13-12 over St. Mary Catholic Central for the second time this season.

Brady Weirich scored five goals, Aiden DePue had a goal and three assists, Cameron Barber and Logan Johnson each scored once, and Brennan McIntire added four assists.

"It was a hard back-and-forth battle with Bedford," SMCC coach Frank Giarmo said. "Neither team gave up tonight. It's nice to have a crosstown rival. And fun to play on a Friday night. We look forward to hosting them in a couple weeks for the rematch."

Riley DeSarbo led SMCC with six goals and Patrick Lipford and Chaz Harrington scored three apiece. Holden Kennedy tallied five assists.

JJ Hawkins played well in net for the Falcons.

PREP BASEBALL

Ida starts fast

IDA − Ida scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to quickly pull away for a 5-3 win Friday.

Carter Diedrich and AJ Schrader doubled to lead a 5-hit attack for IDa, and Owen Snyder finished 2-for-3. Noah Adkins earned the win, allowing 3 runs and striking out 6 over 5 innings.

Whiteford collected 8 hits. Mason VanBrandt finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Airport wins 10th

CARLETON − Airport starter Sean Langton was staked to an early lead and cruised through five shutout innings for a 10-0 win over Jefferson Friday.

Langton gave up 4 hits and a walk while striking out 3.

The Jets scored seven runs in the first inning with RBI from Langton, Shade Daniels, Jack Mills, Drew VanWasshenova, and Kyle Harvell.

Daniels finished with 2 hits and 3 stolen bases. Tyler Lakatos, VanWasshenova, and Harvell also had 2 hits.

Grosse Ile tops Rams

GROSSE ILE − Grosse Ile was outhit by Flat Rock Friday but defended its home field with a 9-7 win.

The Rams collected 12 hits against just seven for Grosse Ile. Brian Booms, Jayden Yancy, Joey Godfrey, and Mikey Giroux each had multiple hits for Flat Rock.

Grosse Ile scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good. The Red Devils ran wild with 11 stolen bases.

PREP SOCCER

Bucki nets trick

IDA − Olivia Bucki notched a hat trick to help Airport defeat Ida 5-0 Friday.

Bucki added an assist to her three-goal night, Hannah Dittich scored on a penalty kick, and Marlie Lozon-Liggett also scored. Cecelia Ortega and Skylar Gerweck-Meyer had assists.

Madilynn Daniels made 14 saves to earn the shutout. Dittrich shined defensively.

Rams pitch shutout

FLAT ROCK − Bella Thomas and Courtney Kraszewski each scored twice as Flat Rock shut out Lincoln Park 6-0 Friday.

Megan Woelkers added a goal and an assist and Savannah Bodart also scored for the Rams.

Jags bite SMCC

St. Mary Catholic Central dipped to 5-4 overall with a 3-0 loss to Allen Park Friday.

Ana Perna played well in goal for the Kestrels.

"The girls played hard," SMCC coach Laura Perry said. "It's been a tough and long week for everyone. We will be focusing on connecting passes fluidly as we build an attack."
