Local Sports: Bedford defense saves day to improve to 12-0

TEMPERANCE − Bedford's offense was missing a step, but the Mules' girls basketball team played tough defense to improve to 12-0 with a 39-17 win over Lenawee Christian Monday.

The defensive battle saw Bedford take a 9-5 lead into halftime. The game opened up for the Mules after the break with 30 second-half points.

"Poor shooting and foul trouble in the first half made for a low-scoring affair," Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. "Our defense was the brightest spot tonight."

Victoria Gray led Bedford with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Aubrey Hensley dished out 5 assists.

Mules, Bulldogs move up

LANSING – Both Bedford (12-0) and Summerfield (11-1) have moved up a spot in the Associated Press girls basketball poll.

Bedford is No. 8 in Division 1 and Summerfield holds the same spot in Division 4. Both were No. 9 last week.

The first AP boys poll of the season also was released Tuesday. Bedford received honorable mention in Division 1.

PREP BOWLING

Airport, Huron perfect

FLAT ROCK − Both the boys and girls teams for Airport and New Boston Huron improved to 6-0 Monday in Huron League play at Flat Rock Lanes.

Airport's boys survived a close 18-12 battle with Milan (3-3). The two sides split both the baker and regular games with the Jets earning extra points for total pins. Colin Peterson (197/244) and George Rote (221) led Airport. Max Jennes (181/248) paced Milan.

Nick Suemnick (232/205), Donnie Jacobs (22/203), Logan Wyszynski (219), and Tyler Toth (207) led Huron over Flat Rock. Issac Arredondo (232/190) was strong for the Rams.

Jefferson picked up its first win 27-3 over Dundee (0-6) behind strong games from Isaiah Knott (203) and Gabe Cadle (180). Sarah Straka and Mikalah Yeske had points for Dundee.

Riverview took down SMCC 20-10. Brady Runyon won both his match points for the Falcons.

Airport's girls also got a fight from Milan (3-3). Kasay Shook's 220 and Ryan Giese's 194 powered the Jets (6-0), while Rachael Paledeau's 205 and Gabby Dryden's 190 led Milan.

Veronica Richardson, Addison Doloncic, Maria Williams, Olivia Demick, Vanessa DeVita, and Mackenzie McCluskey all earned points for Huron (6-0) in a win over Flat Rock (2-4). Meredith Stull led the Rams.

Dundee improved to 3-3 with a 29-1 win over Jefferson. Liberty Ostrader (192/180) and Brianna Cousino (173) led Dundee. Callie Calvin bowled a 157 game for Jefferson.

SMCC picked up its second with 26-4 over Riverview. Lilly Duran (193) and Abagale Johnson (163) led SMCC.

PREP SWIMMING

Milan places ninth

HOLLAND − Milan placed ninth out of 13 teams this past weekend at the Holland D3 Invitational.

The Big Reds made two new state cuts from Gavin Kruise in the 100-yard butterfly, and the medley relay team of Zach Heikka, Sam Kennedy, Gunnar Kruise, and Gavin Kruise.

The team's top swims came from Zach Heikka (3rd backstroke, 8th 50 free), Gavin Kruise (7th butterfly), Steven Gottardi (7th diving), Ben Heikka (9th 500 free), Elias Hobbs (10th breaststroke), Kennedy (15th 100 free), Elias Hobbs (16th 500 free), and Gunnar Kruise (16th 50 free).

The 200 free relay was just off a state cut and took seventh with Gavin Kruise, Gunnar Kruise, Kennedy and Ben Heikka. The 400 free relay of Ben Heikka, Zach Heikka, Kennedy and Gavin Kruise took ninth.

PREP HOCKEY

SMCC on a roll

ROYAL OAK − St. Mary Catholic Central won its third game in a row Saturday with a 4-3 overtime win over Bishop Foley United.

Nicholas Rakoczy, Daniel Neubauer, and Jason Hawkins scored in regulation for SMCC. Bishop Foley scored three power-play goals in the second period to tie the game.

Jack Lisker provided the winning tally just 1:50 into overtime on a pass from Rakoczy.

Neubauer and Riley DeSarbo added two assists apiece, and Hawkins had one helper.

Falcons' goalie Peter Provost made 25 saves to earn the win. SMCC outshot Bishop Foley 37-28.

Flat Rock adds to Hall

The 2023 inductees into the Flat Rock Athletic Hall of Fame will be the 2012 girls bowling team, Jeff Lee, Kenneth Jabe, James Kish, Lester France, and Herb Mell.

Induction ceremonies will be held at halftime of a boys varsity game against Grosse Ile on Feb. 10. The girls varsity team also will play that night.

Deportivo routs Athletico

Kayla Vore, Jake Winter, and Jaeden Vega all scored goals for Athletico Monroe, but it was not enough in a 12-3 loss to Deportivo Monroe in the Monroe Adult Indoor Coed Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.

Humberto Hernandez, Serafin Gomez and Felix Sanchez all scored for Deportivo.
