Local Sports: Bedford duo makes school history in state tennis finals

MIDLAND – Carter Ryan and Taylor Burgermeister made history during the weekend.

The two sophomores earned the first doubles point at the state finals in Bedford school history.

They beat Alex Li and William Richart of White Lake Lakeland 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Ryan and Burgermeister had the misfortune to face top seeds Roofy Elsaadany and Aiden Tanis of Midland Dow in the second round and lost 6-0, 6-0.

All of Bedford’s other player lost in the first round but Jaxon Nejedlik won his first set at No. 2 singles against the No. 5 seed, and Zach Wise and Mason Charlton put up a great battle at No. 3 doubles.

“This year’s team had six first-year players,” said Bedford coach Eric Cukierski, who was named Region Coach of the Year by his peers after the Mules’ performance in the Regional. “We will graduate eight of this year’s squad, so we will start building for next season immediately.”

PREP TENNIS

Bowman bows out

KALAMAZOO – Milan’s Matt Bowman dropped his opening match in the Division 4 state finals at No. 1 singles, falling in three sets to Simon Haubenstricker of Frankenmuth.

Bowman dominated the first set 6-1, but lost the next two 6-3, 6-1.

Haubenstricker went on to lose in the next round to No. 6 seed Elie Festerling of Allegan.

Morse leads Bedford

NEW LOTHROP – Kadie Morse made just one error in 35 hitting attempts and finished with 17 kills as Bedford won the New Lothrop Tournament Saturday.

The Mules (37-7-2) beat Williamston 25-21, 25-15, Fowler 25-8, 25-16, and Corunna 25-15, 25-16 in pool play, then handled Williamston 25-23, 21-25, 15-10 in the semifinals and Milford 25-19, 25-20 in the championship match.

Other Bedford standouts were Jaelyn Hall (32 Kills, .404), Victoria Gray (25 kills, .400, 14 blocks), Rylee Haberland (51 digs), and Kaylin Schroeder (38 digs, 34 points, 101 assists). Alivia Brown, Taylor Destatte, and Mya Krohn led the defense.

Costlow makes team

WARREN – Jessica Costlow earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after helping St. Mary Mary Catholic Central to a 2-2 record against some of the best teams in the state in the Beast of the East Tournament Saturday.

SMCC (27-6) beat Oxford 21-25, 25-22, 15-4 and Grand Haven 24-26, 25-14, 15-11, and lost to North Branch 25-22, 11-25, 15-11 and Farmington Mercy 27-25, 28-26.

Costlow had 45 kills, 43 digs, 5 blocks and 3 aces.

Other standouts were Mackenzie Niedermeyer (116 assists, 3 aces), Mckenna Payne (64 digs, 3 aces), Kyleigh Cobb (27 digs, 8 aces), Ashley Ruhlig (25 digs), Madeline Dettling (35 kills), Molly Blanchett (12 kills), Lauren Conant (5 blocks, 4 aces), and Jillian Anderson (12 kills, 4 blocks).

PREP GOLF

Smith shoots 204

BATTLE CREEK – Bedford senior Elaina Smith wrapped up her high school golf career with a two-day total of 204 in the Division 1 state finals at Bedford Valley Golf Course.

She shot 101 Friday and 103 Saturday to place 78th out of 107 golfers.

“Elaina had a fantastic season,” Bedford coach Brad Reed said.

Carlson places 18th

EAST LANSING – Gibraltar Carlson shot 916 to place 18th in the Division 2 state finals at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West Friday and Saturday.

Junior Anika Irwin carded a 217 to lead the Marauders. Carlson’s other scores were Brooklyn DesJardins 228, Andria Konczal 233, Madison Cooper 243, and Madilyn Peterson 248.

Callie Calvin of Jefferson finished with a round of 214 which ranked 78th overall.

Hoffman improves

ALLENDALE – Delaney Hoffman of Summerfield shaved 10 strokes off her opening-day score with a 99 Saturday in the Division 4 state finals.

Her two-day total 208 was good for 56th place.

PREP SWIMMING

SMCC wins trophy

WAYNE – St. Mary Catholic Central played second in a six-team field at the Wayne Memorial Invitational Friday and Saturday.

“This was a tough two-day meet that really pushed the girls to the limit,” SMCC coach Gretchen Bylow said. “They rose to the challenge and the results were glorious.”

The Kestrels had 17 personal-best times.

Monika Burkardt won the 200 and 500-yard freestyles and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay with Mary Claire Wright, Kaylee Kamprath and Maya Zaleski.

McKenzie Kidd was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the breaststroke. Other strong performances came from Catherine Ambs, Sunny Duran, Isabelle Niedermeyer, Katelyn Rutkowski, and Brigeta Yakoo.

Dundee wins two

DETROIT – Dundee had seven personal-best times Saturday in beating Detroit Cass Tech and Western International to push its record to 13-1.

CROSS COUNTRY

Huron boys third

DEXTER – New Boston Huron’s boys scored 136 points to place third behind Pinckney (35) and Chelsea (46) in the Medium Schools Division of the Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard Invitational.

Ryan Morris led Huron in 12th place. Teammates Griffin Mentzer, Abdul Ghenewa, and Luke Dulecki ran 23-26-47.

Keegan Masters and Elliott Rodgers were 14th and 30th, respectively, for ninth-place Whiteford (259).

Huron’s Molly Johnston finished 10th and Avery Turk 15th in the girls race to help their team take sixth. Emily Rasor led Whiteford.

PREP SOCCER

State Line keeps winning

TEMPERANCE – Trevin Johnson’s first-half goal off a free kick proved to be the difference as State Line Christian beat Troy Bethany Christian 1-0 Friday.

It was the 17th goal of the season for Johnson.

Goalkeeper Eli Dyer recorded his fifth shutout of the season as the Patriots improved to 12-6 with their fifth win in a row.

CYO SOCCER

St. Joseph triumphs

Katelyn Boberg scored twice and David Sweeney had one goal as Erie St. Joseph beat Holy Ghost 3-2 to finish the regular season with a 6-4 record.

Thomas Snow had an assist and Dominic Imbrogno played well in goal.
