Local Sports: Bedford girls stay perfect with road win at Whitmer

TOLEDO − Bedford's girls basketball team traveled to Ohio Saturday looking for their 11th win of the season.

It took a while, but the Mules pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Toledo Whitmer 48-41 and keep their perfect season humming.

Bedford led just 18-17 at halftime.

"It was really physical. A little different style of game," Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. "We eventually adjusted and came out at halftime and played better."

Bedford outscored Whitmer 17-10 in the third quarter and led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter.

"It was a close game through three quarters for sure," Ryan said. "It was another good road test against a big school that plays in an elite basketball league."

Peyton Behnke scored a career-high 19 points to lead Bedford. Victoria Gray added 10 points and 19 rebounds.

"Behnke, in my opinion, had her best game of the season," Ryan said. "She was hard to stop on offense. She had some really dynamic moves to the hoop and hit some big 3s for us."

Jets come up short

CARLETON − Airport played a strong, disciplined game but still came up short as Lincoln Park pulled away late for a 60-55 victory Saturday.

The Railsplitters hit three 3-pointers to grab the lead in the final 3 minutes of the game. Airport led 40-39 going into the final period despite having to climb out of a 10-2 hole in the first quarter.

"We made a few defensive adjustments at the start of the second quarter and our guys executed them well," Airport coach Jason Ruhlig said. "Our guard play by Brandon McComas, Brett Moore, and Colin Nowak was critical down the stretch. They played their best games of the season protecting the ball with only nine turnovers, attacking the basket, and sharing the ball assisting 11 times."

Many of those passes found Cooper Nye inside. He finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Nowak and Moore added 13 points apiece and McComas scored 10.

"We were not able to get the victory, however I thought we played our best game of the season against a very talented Lincoln Park team," Ruhlig said.

Lincoln Park won the junior varsity game 51-41. Ryan Stahr (12 points) and Bryce Kull (10) led the Jets.
