Local Sports: Bedford softball team continues to rewrite record book

TEMPERANCE – Extensive rewrites are going to be needed for the Bedford softball record book at the end of the season.

The Mules continued their assault on the records during a 14-9, 16-0 sweep of Ida Thursday.

Sydney Shammo went 7-for-8 with six stolen bases. That gives her 47 swipes for the season, breaking her own school record. She also broke the single-season record for runs with 61.

Aubrey Hensley was 3-for-4 and drove in five runs. She added to her school record with her 10th homer.

Payton Pudlowski went 4-for-6 with five RBI and four stolen bases. She added to her school record for RBI with 56 and broke the school record for triples in a season.

McKenna Dunlap also had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-7 with a trio of doubles and nine RBI.

The pitching wins went to Adrianna Kester and Maddie Henegar.

PREP SOFTBALL

Aulph leads Monroe

ANN ARBOR – Alana Aulph and Jenna Ruettinger had five hits each to lead Monroe to a 12-2, 13-3 sweep of Ann Arbor Skyline Thursday.

Other offensive standouts for the 6-10 Trojans (5-5 in Southeastern Conference) were Brynn Reece, Macy Collett, Avery Leach and Avery Collett.

Monroe’s junior varsity also swept, winning 21-11 and 26-8.

Dundee dusts Devils

DUNDEE – Kennedy Irwin was hot from the lead-off spot with five hits, two doubles, a triple, five stolen bases and an RBI to lead Dundee to a 4-3, 8-3 doubleheader sweep of Grosse Ile Thursday.

"I thought we played real good defense for the most part in both games," Dundee coach Mickey Moody said. "The girls were aggressive and played with more intensity tonight, but the key for us tonight was Kennedy Irwin in the lead-off spot. She was seeing the ball really well and was hitting the ball extremely well and setting the table for her teammates."

Shay VanZandt also added a double and triple among her four hits on the day and had two RBI, Emily Killion had three hits and two RBI, and Kiernan Brown had three hits and an RBI.

Kaylee Imo picked up her sixth win in the first game, and McKenna Salley earned her third win in the nightcap.

Sic swings hot bat

NEW BOSTON – Emma Sic collected four hits, including two doubles, as New Boston Huron doubled up St. Mary Catholic Central 8-4 Thursday.

Ellen Town and winning pitcher Rylie Greggo had two hits each for Huron.

Jenna Kapp and Faith Dean each had two hits for SMCC.

Bears' bats silent

RIVERVIEW – Jefferson struggled to find its offense Thursday in a 10-1 loss to Riverview.

Brooke Payment drove in Lindsey Gennoe for the Bears' only run.

PREP BASEBALL

Miller powers Monroe

ANN ARBOR – Noah Miller amassed 15 strikeouts over six innings of work to earn the win and lead Monroe to an 8-2 victory over Ann Arbor Skyline.

Tristin Panza had two RBI, Braden Setzler and Garrett LeBeau had two hits apiece, and Caleb Winkleman struck out the side in the seventh inning.

Monroe improved to 11-4 overall and 7-3 in the Southeastern Conference Red.

Huron blanks SMCC

Micah Smith and Cole Grunwald combined on a four-hit shutout as New Boston Huron stopped St. Mary Catholic Central 2-0 Thursday.

They combined for 11 strikeouts.

Rory Callahan staked Huron to an early lead with an RBI double in the first inning. Conner Grant and Matthew Williams had two hits each.

Drew Bylow, Josh Theisen, Aidan Burrous, and Andrew Pope had the SMCC hits.

Riverview rally tops Bears

Riverview pulled away after the game was tied 4-4 in the fifth inning to beat Jefferson 12-4.

Landon Moore had a two-run double and Gavin Gelso went 2-for-3 for Jefferson.

Ferguson hits slam

GIBRALTAR – Liam Ferguson blasted a grand slam, but Gibraltar Carlson fell 12-7 to Woodhaven Thursday.

Rob MacAleese went 2-for-2 for the Marauders, who fell to 4-17 overall and 2-8 in the Downriver League.

Mason rally falls short

BLISSFIELD – Erie Mason rallied for three runs in the fifth inning but fell a run short in a 4-3 loss to Blissfield Thursday.

Bryce Diehl led the Eagles with two hits.

TRACK AND FIELD

Jefferson tops Jets

CARLETON – Alexa Glancy won the 400-meter dash in 1:00.1 to break her own school record Thursday. She also won the 100 and 200 to lead Jefferson to a 80.9-47.1 win over Airport.

Veronica Fitzgerald nearly took down another record after winning the 800 in 2:23.0. The Bear record is 2:22.7 by Bekah Smeltzer.

Jefferson finished 1-2-3 in the 3,200 with Jenna Pilachowski, Riley Peer and Kim Miller. Other first were Madison McKinney (shot-put), Katie Powell (long jump), Mia Schroeder (100 hurdles), the 400 relay (Katie Powell, Kirstin Vanisacker, Lindsay Masserant, Alyssa Masserant), 800 relay (Fitzgerald, Vanisacker, Alyssa Masserant, Glancy), and the 3,200 relay (Fitzgerald, Peer, Miller, Pilachowski).

Winners for Airport were Madison Rice (high jump), Bella Awishes (discus), Mara Szuper (1,600), 300 hurdles (Sydney Mason), and the 1,600 relay (Tara Szuper, Rice, Gianna Lafata, Mara Szuper).

Jefferson won the boys meet 85-43.

Alex Mansfield (shot-put, discus), Isaac Merkel (high jump, 1,600) and Carter McCalister (800, 3,200) all were double winners.

Other Jefferson wins were from Malachi Pribyl (110 hurdles), Von Wiggins (200), and Myles Tackett (400), the 1,600 relay (Wiggins, Ben Merkel, Isaac Merkel, Tackett), and the 3,200 relay (Ty Grube, McCalister, Blake Schroeder, Wiggins).

"It was a great battle between us and our backyard neighbors," Jefferson coach Josh Ludwick said. "We tried some new lineups. Some of those lineups worked and some failed. I'm glad to see it worked out."

Summerfield wins two

SAND CREEK – Brandon Thompson had three individual wins and ran the opening leg of the winning 800 relay in a great day for Summerfield's boys track and field team.

The Bulldogs won 96-40 over Sand Creek and 73-64 over Morenci to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Tri-County Conference.

Thompson won the long jump, 400 and 800. Other winners for Summerfield were Nathan Herrmann (110 and 300 hurdles), Evan Suydam (1,600, 3,200), Drew Dafoe (pole vault), Roman Iott (high jump), the 800 relay team (Thompson, Iott, Herrmann, Teddy Gault), and the 3,200 relay team (Trace Secor, Dakota Kohn, Suydam, Josh Jensen).

Summerfield's girls lost both duals with wins from Faith Secor (3,200), Cameron Taylor (300 hurdles), Keslyn Cay (discus), and Alyssa Conley (pole vault).

PREP TENNIS

Carlson moves to 6-1-1

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson is 6-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Downriver League after beating Southgate Anderson 5-3 Thursday.

“It’s truly a surprise with all the newcomers,” said Carlson coach Brian Herman. “It’s been fun to watch.”

Erin Riley won at No. 3 singles and the Marauders swept the doubles with Kamryn Bell-Nadia Papalas, Lauren Spano-Delaney Brown, Brooklyn Roldan-Lia Stith, and Delaney Boller-Rylie Sulewski.
