Local Sports: Bedford tennis wins Regional; Whiteford secures TCC softball title
TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s girls tennis team won its first Regional championship in decades Thursday and it was a true team title.
Every flight scored at least 2 points as Bedford cruised to a Division 2 crown at home. The Mules scored 23 points to finish ahead of runner-up Trenton with 18.
“It was outstanding,” Bedford coach Bill Ryan said. “Everybody had ownership in us winning the Regional.”
Ryan has been unable to determine the last time the Mules won a Regional.
“It’s been a while, probably about 20 years,” he said.
Ryan is pretty sure this is the first time Bedford has ever hosted a Regional.
“The girls got to play in front of people they knew and that motivated them,” Ryan said. “We probably were the second-best team in the Regional, but we won a lot of three-set matches.”
Regional champions for Bedford came from Sophia LaPointe at No. 2 singles, Lillian Nudi at No. 3 singles, and Hanah Kudzia-Samantha Clark at No. 1 doubles.
Julia Martin was runner-up at No. 1 singles.
Gibraltar Carlson finished tied with Allen Park for third place with 12 points.
The Marauders finished second in all four doubles flights with Nadia Papalas-Kamryn Bell, Lauren Spano-Delaney Brown, Brooklyn Roldan-Lia Stith, and Delaney Boller-Rylie Sulewski.

Monroe season ends
Monroe saw its season come to an end after finishing fifth Thursday in the Division 1 Regional at Ann Arbor Pioneer.
The Trojans earned points from five first-round victories from Abella Hellenberg (No. 2 singles), Emily Casey (No. 4 singles), Mackenzie Mielke-Bailey Benvenuto (No. 1 doubles), Mara Bica-Emma Middleton (No. 2 doubles), and Isabella Cicero-Melanie Zanger (No. 3 doubles).
Pioneer won with 32 points and Ann Arbor Skyline was second with 20.
SMCC takes fifth
ANN ARBOR – St. Mary Catholic Central scored 4 points to finish fifth Thursday in the Division 4 Regional at Ann Arbor Greenhills.
SMCC's Elizabeth Zwack fell in the championship round at No. 2 singles 1-6, 6-4, 4-6 to Audrey Ray of Royal Oak Shrine.
Marisa Rostash (No. 1 singles) and Brooke Kemmerling-Grace Kemmerling (No. 1 doubles) also won matches for the Kestrels.
Greenhills was Regional champion with 22 points and Wixom St. Catherine was second with 8.
PREP SOFTBALL
Whiteford wins TCC
PETERSBURG – Whiteford captured at least a share of the Tri-County Conference title with an 8-2, 15-0 sweep of Summerfield Thursday.
Unity Nelson pitched a four-inning shutout with 10 strikeouts in Game 2. Berlynn Keller was the winner in the first game, allowing two runs on two hits with nine strikeouts.
Whiteford scattered 23 hits over the pair of games, with four hits apiece from Aly VanBrandt, Ambrelle Billau and Keller.
Abby Haller finished 1-for-3 with a run scored for Summerfield in the opener.
The Bobcats improved to 10-0 in the TCC and close out the conference schedule with a doubleheader Wednesday against Erie Mason.
Bears start Ring of Honor
Jefferson made Susan Sontag and Alyssa Eppler the charter members of its Ring of Honor, then celebrated by sweeping Taylor Trillium 14-2 and 10-0 Thursday.
Cameryn Carter earned both wins, Carly Grassly homered and Samara Liparoto, Rylee Dunn and Carter had three hits each.

Sontag was a four year varsity player from 2003-06 when the Bears went 104-27. She also earned All State recognition as a senior helping her team get to the state title game, hitting .565 with 64 runs and 42 steals.
Eppler, earned four varsity letters from 2002-05, As a senior, she hit .469, 35 RBI, 40 runs and was named Huron League MVP.
Jets' Peterson throws no-hitter
CARLETON – Zoe Peterson tossed a complete-game no-hitter to lead Airport to a 4-1 victory over Belleville Thursday. The Jets split a pair of games, falling to Milan 10-2.
Peterson allowed one unearned run without giving up a hit or a walk while striking out 10.
"She had great command of her pitches tonight," Airport coach Jessica Irwin said.
Kaitlyn Poe was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored, Jazzy Porter was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run, and Hailey Boitnott added two hits.
Milan scored seven runs in the first inning to run away from Airport in the second game.
"After that we settled in and played a good defensive game," Irwin said. "I was very proud of the fight they showed. It’s hard to stay focused when you fall behind early, but I was proud that we never gave up."
Hailey Knox finished 4-for-5 at the plate for Milan and Mariah Stines earned the pitching win and was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Terria Ronayne and Leila Daniels also had two RBI each.
RaeAnn Drummond was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for Airport.
Monroe roars out of gate
ADRIAN – Monroe scored 13 runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 19-0 win over Adrian Thursday.
Maci Willey went 3-for-3 with four RBI and Macy Collett was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples. Allie Hall blasted a two-run home run and drove in five runs and winning pitcher Avery Collett and Jenna Ruettinger added two hits apiece for the 9-13 Trojans, who are 8-8 in the Southeastern Conference.
Mason's Moore excels
ERIE – Maddie Moore pitched a complete game shutout to lead Erie Mason to a 10-0 win over Britton Deerfield in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday. The Eagles won 9-4 in the nightcap to complete the two-game sweep.
Moore gave up just five hits and one walk while striking out six over seven innings.
Jayde Cilley, Aubree Winzeler, and Lizzy Liedel each had two hits for Mason.
Liedel added three more hits, three runs and a RBI in the second game, while Audrey Hempel was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
Ida sweeps Hillsdale
HILLSDALE – Reese Hennessey led an offensive onslaught Thursday for Ida in a 13-2, 8-4 doubleheader sweep of Hillsdale.
Hennessey was 4-for-5 with two runs scored in the first game and added two hits, two runs and two RBI in the nightcap.
Alyssa Hogston, Jessica Schrader, Summer Smith, McKenna Tarry, Kelsey Stein, and Hailey Lambert all had multiple hits for Ida. Tarry and Lambert were the winning pitchers.
Dundee loses steam
GRASS LAKE – Grass Lake swept a doubleheader Thursday against Dundee 7-6 and 9-6.
"We started out fast and then we took our foot off the gas in both games," Dundee coach Mickey Moody said. "We had leads in both games and let Grass Lake back in the games with fielding mistakes and not capitalizing on opportunities with runners in scoring position to build our lead. We out-hit Grass Lake in both games, but one team made plays and one made untimely mistakes."
Kennedy Irwin finished with six hits on the day, including two triples. She broke the Dundee single-season record for triples with seven so far this year.
Emily Killion had four hits with two doubles, Kelsie Schmidt added four hits and two RBI, and McKenna Salley and Alyssa Amrhein also played well.

Ida rallies for split
HILLSDALE – Ida scored nine runs in the seventh inning to erase an 8-1 Hillsdale lead and win 10-9 Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader. Hillsdale won the second game 13-6.
The Blue Streaks had 10 hits from 10 different players, led by doubles from AJ Schrader and Bradley Samples. Samples had three RBI.
Gavin Borton finished 3-for-3 in Game 2, Nico Costello was 2-for-3, and Carter Diedrich added three RBI.

Bedford goes low
GRASS LAKE – Bedford finished one stroke out of second place with a season-best 334 team score Thursday in the Chelsea Invitational at Calderone Golf Club.
Grosse Ile was first with a 320, followed by Ann Arbor Pioneer (333), Howell (333), Bedford (334), Dexter (340), Chelsea (359), Adrian (364), Saline (369), and Ypsilanti Lincoln (407).
Frank Soss led the Mules with an 82, and was closely followed by Carter Klawonn (83), Camden Price (84), Jayce Yarad (85), and Boston Gallup (96).

Ida finishes strong
IDA – Ida closed out the regular season with a 5-0 victory over Hillsdale on Senior Night. The Blue Streaks finished 9-8-1 for the program's most wins in its four-year history.
Mia Karl, Hannah Huston, Tinke Rambags, and Clare Allen scored for Ida. Hillsdale also had an own-goal on a cross from Ida's Carrie Roocroft.
Rambags, Allen, Kayla Liechty, and Rilee Weatherholt had assists.
