Local Sports: Carlson, Jefferson's Calvin advance to state golf finals
YPSILANTI − Callie Calvin could hear the whispers.
The Jefferson senior knew she was having a good day on the golf course, but she wasn't sure exactly where she stood in the standings. Eventually the word started to spread that Calvin was in the running to qualify for state during Wednesday's Division 2 Regional at Pine View Golf Course.
"Someone said something to her and she asked me, 'Do you think there's a chance?'" Jefferson coach Ann Maitland said. "I just told her to keep playing her best. I didn't want to give her a yes or no. I told her to just play her best and we'd find out at the end."
In the end, it was good news.
Calvin scored a personal-best 93 to finishing fourth overall and earn the top individual qualifier for the state meet Oct. 14-15 in East Lansing.
Joining her will be the entirety of Gibraltar Carlson's squad after the Marauders finished third in the team standings with 407. Ypsilanti Lincoln scored 378 to win the meet and Grosse Pointe South was second with 379.
As a team, Jefferson finished in fifth place with 420.
"It seemed like our whole team started off a little rough, but as the weather warmed up, most of the girls warmed up," Maitland said. "We took five seniors, so they really thought we could go. If everybody shot their average, we could've gone, but it just didn't work out for us."
Kayce Maitland (102), Claire Conover (111), Rylee Dunn (114), and Olivia Peare (116) also played well for Jefferson.
The Bears aren't hanging their heads. They finished the season 21-2 in dual meets, second in the Huron League, and winners of the Monroe County Championship.
"We didn't make it, but we're still good with the season we had," Maitland said. "We just need to look back on our great season, not just this one meet."
Andria Konczal led Carlson with a 93, Anika Irwin shot 98, Madison Cooper 107, Brooklyn DesJardins 109, and Madilyn Peterson 117.
Airport finished in eighth place with 453, led by Sophie Bucki with a 102 and Hannah Roof with 107.
AJ Skene carded a 103 to lead New Boston Huron to a ninth-place finish with 454. Brooke Leporowski and Addison Bozynski each had a 113.
Mary Ronayne of Dearborn Divine Child (94) and Ava Carson of Trenton (98) earned the other two individual qualifiers.

Huron wins on, off court
NEW BOSTON − New Boston Huron took home the win in more ways than one Wednesday.
Huron defeated Taylor and also raised over $1,500 as part of their Pink Out event. The money raised with be donated to the American Cancer Society and also used to help a local Huron family cover additional healthcare expenses.
On the court, Gabby Cumbo had a strong game for Huron with 11 kills and 18 assists, Quinn Drysdale logged 12 digs and 24 assists, Ellen Town contributed 15 digs and 3 aces, Allison Hollingshead added 25 digs, Erin Newman 9 kills, and Emma Dittmar 8 kills.
Dundee falls in five
HILLSDALE − Dundee's Macy Salenbien scored a career-high 16 kills but Hillsdale was able to overcome the Vikings in five sets Tuesday 25-16, 25-13, 20-25, 23-25, 15-13.
Lily Motylinski also had strong offensive games with 5 kills and 5 aces, Kennedy Irwin was credited with 5 kills, Briley Bordine recorded 31 digs, Lola Salenbien added 25 assists, and Ashley Brant also served well.

SMCC pulls away
CARLETON – St. Mary Catholic Central pulled away from a 1-1 halftime tie to beat Airport 3-1 Wednesday in the Huron League Tournament.
“This was a great all-around game for us,” SMCC coach Nathan Olson said. “We played 100% from start to finish. We were tied at half and my assistant, Coach (Rob) St. Pierre, said to the boys that ‘You may not remember winning this game in the future, but you will remember losing it.’ That struck home. The boys came out determined to win.”
Seth Hendrix, Chaz Harrington and Steven Hypio scored the Falcon goals with assists coming from Holden Kennedy, Will Schafer and Caleb Hendrix.
Ida rolls to 15th win
BROOKLYN – Jaxon Bolster and Davin Slater scored two goals apiece to lead Ida to a 7-0 rout of Brooklyn Columbia Central Wednesday.
Evan Schmitz added a goal and two assists for the 15-1 Blue Streaks. Grantham Nelson and Dillon Holycross had the other goals. Donnie Lutz had a pair of assists and Dustin Holycross and Bolster one each.
“I am very proud of our team this year on how they have played,” Ida coach Tim Allen said. “Very unselfish soccer which has led to a lot of players being able to score and very hard to defend. The fullbacks and halfbacks have ground it out this year and have led to our success.”
Bears top Rams
FLAT ROCK − Jaden Swam and Michael Armetta scored to lead Jefferson to a 2-1 win over Flat Rock Wednesday in the Huron League Tournament.
Seniors Ben Winter and Eastin Kegley also played well for the Bears.
"We are picking up momentum heading into Districts next week," Jefferson coach Rob Kull said.
Huron falls late
GROSSE ILE − New Boston Huron gave up three goals in the final eight minutes of the game to fall 3-1 to Grosse Ile Wednesday night in the Huron League Tournament.
Andy Traster scored off an assist from Jack Maxwell in the first half to put Huron ahead 1-0.
CROSS COUNTRY
Dundee's Rubley crowned
TECUMSEH − Dundee sophomore Isaak Rubley ran 17:09.58 to take first place at the second Lenawee County Athletic Association jamboree Wednesday.
The Vikings were third as a team with 79 points, behind Hudson in first with 63 and Clinton second with 73.
Zachary McMahan (fifth), Noah Nieman (17th), and Brennan Graham (26th) also ran well for Dundee.
Jack Gelso (23rd) and Luke Stanley (27th) led Ida, which did not factor into the team scoring.
Bridget Waterstradt placed 17th and Kaylee Hovey was 18th to lead Dundee's girls to a fifth-place finish with 108 points. Onsted won the meet with 37.
Ida's Katelyn Bydlowski was 10th.

Brooks leads Monroe
Grady Brooks threw two touchdown passes and Asher Simmons scored two as Monroe eighth grade (1-1) beat Ypsilanti 38-14.
Jefferson stops Renton
Jefferson made a fourth-down stop on the 3-yard line late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 13-6 win over Renton.
Lincoln Sellers, Mark Moore, Carter Parent, and Nicholas Grant played well for Renton.
CYO SOCCER
St. Joseph’s triumphs
ERIE – David Sweeney had a goal and an assist to lead Erie St. Joseph’s to a 2-1 win over Trinity Lutheran Wednesday.
Katelyn Boberg had the other goal and Dominic Imbrogno was strong in net.
